Prof eyes Eric Cantor primary challenge
Source: Politico
Even House Majority Leader Eric Cantor isnt immune to primary challenges: The Virginia Republican will reportedly be getting an opponent from the right this year.
Randolph-Macon College professor David Brat told the National Review Online that he has gotten interest and support from outside groups and leaders as big as they get.
Brat told the National Review that he will announce is candidacy Thursday and has already hired a campaign consultant. He criticized Cantors support of the budget compromise passed in December, his positions on immigration reform and what he says is too little action on Obamacare.
I want to be Eric Cantors term limit, Brat told the publication.

"He chairs the department of economics and business at Randolph-Macon College and heads its BB&T Moral Foundations of Capitalism program. The funding for the program came from John Allison, the former CEO of BB&T (a financial-services company) who now heads the Cato Institute. The two share an affinity for Ayn Rand: Allison is a major supporter of the Ayn Rand Institute, and Brat co-authored a paper titled An Analysis of the Moral Foundations in Ayn Rand. Brat says that while he isnt a Randian, he has been influenced by Atlas Shrugged and appreciates Rands case for human freedom and free markets.
His academic background isnt all economics, though. Brat got a business degree from Hope College in Holland, Mich., then went to Princeton seminary. Before deciding to focus on economics, he wanted to be a professor of systematic theology and cites John Calvin, Karl Barth, and Reinhold Niebuhr as influences."
Coo-coo, coo-coo....
The morality of Ayn Rand and Calvinism: "let us worship the golden calf, because we are pre-destined, infallibly, and irrevocably for our wealth to come to us".
And as vile as Eric Cantor is, he deserves opposition and annoyance. Whatever this Brat is as a person, mechanically how would his substitution alter anything in the government? Of course, the real fortuitous blessing would be that a Democratic candidate wins the congressional vote in the district; although i scry none of this in the crystal ball, or in the tea leaves of the cup.

(20,176 posts)We should find people who are raging leftists to run in primaries against those worst of the Republicans like Cantor that are not even popular with their own constituents but remain in office because the district would never elect a Democrat.
Run to the center in the primaries claiming pragmatism and an end to the gridlock in Washington ("I am a Republican that can work with everybody." , then about 2 months out from Election Day, when it's too late for anybody to run a third-party candidacy in earnest, run as the leftists we are.
Thus, the election is pinko vs. blue.

............That said, Brat has a few interesting factors working in his favor. First, hes expecting support from some of the deep-pocketed outside groups that have long been frustrated with the current Republican leadership. Brat couldnt speak on the record about which groups he has met with, but he tells NRO that the political figures and organizations that have indicated interest in his candidacy are as big as they get.
I think its safe to say it will definitely rattle some cages when it comes out, he says...........................
Brat can expect backing from much of the Virginia grassroots, especially the libertarian and tea-party activists who have long been frustrated with the state partys leaders. Its a big decision to fire your congressman and replace him with somebody else, says Larry Nordvig, head of the Richmond Tea Party, but I think people are tired of hearing the rhetoric and seeing the opposite of what theyre looking for in a conservative leader.
He adds that theres also frustration in grassroots circles with Cantors lack of responsiveness. He is the king of form letters, Nordvig says. If you write to him, if you call, you get a form letter back that is obviously not addressing your issue....
