Suspects In Fatal Carjacking At Short Hills Mall Plead Not Guilty

Source: CBS

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – Four men charged in the fatal carjacking of a Hoboken attorney at an upscale New Jersey mall have pleaded not guilty.

Hanif Thompson, 29, of Irvington; Karif Ford, 31, of Newark; Basim Henry, 32, of Newark; and Kevin Roberts, 33, of Newark, are all charged with murder, felony murder, carjacking, conspiracy, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose.

Prosecutors said they were all involved in the deadly carjacking outside The Mall at Short Hills on Dec. 15. Victim Dustin Friedland, 30, and his wife were leaving the upscale shopping center when they were confronted by two armed men as they were getting into their 2012 silver Range Rover on the third-floor parking deck, prosecutors said.

Sources told CBS 2 that Friedland struggled with the suspects and was shot in the head. His wife was unharmed. Friedland may have been trying to protect his wife, who was already in the SUV when the suspects put a gun to his head, sources said.

Life without parole would certainly seem to be the appropriate sentence for these animals.

Just let them all rot in prison for the rest of their natural lives.

when confronted with a demand at gunpoint to turn over one's keys, one shouldn't try to fight back. No car is worth a person's life.

His wife was in a car.
I am not surprised he wouldn't give up the keys. I presume he didn't want his wife carjacked.

exactly what happened and whether or not she had any chance of getting safely out of the car. I still maintain that attempting to co-operate with armed thugs is a better strategy than attempting to fight them unarmed.

Sorry, I would have done the exact same thing he did, try to save my wife from these POS thugs.
You can meekly give up, I'll fight to the death to save my significant other.

But sometimes we don't know how we'll react in an actual emergency.

I was told that in an attempted carjacking one should throw the keys at the thieves, but never get in the car with them. Once you get in the car, there's a good likelihood that you will be killed.

The couple lived in my town, although I didn't know them. He was only 30 years old. They killed him for what, for a car that they abandoned in Newark a few hours later??? They didn't get anything, other than probably life in jail.

Even other inmates, especially those who have been convicted of non-violent offenses, deserve some protection from violent sociopaths like these scumbags.

Driving ten miles with three accomplices to the parking deck of a shopping mall during the Christmas season just to steal a car just doesn't add up.

DISCLOSURE: I live in the Newark metro area and have been to the mall.

Indeed, they won't hesitate to lie through them.

I remember a Court TV trial about a fatal armored car robbery. The cops got a warrant to phone tap the suspects, then gave a story to the local media full of erroneous information. The phone tapes were played in court, and you could hear the suspects saying things like "Those dumbass cops -- they said our getaway car was blue when it was really green!"

Guilty on all charges...
