Bill would allow chewing Pop-Tarts into gun shapes in Oklahoma schools
Source: AP
OKLAHOMA CITY Oklahoma schoolchildren could not be punished for chewing their breakfast pastries into the shape of a gun under a bill introduced by a Republican legislator.
Rep. Sally Kern said Wednesday that her measure, dubbed the Common Sense Zero Tolerance Act, was in response to school districts' policies that she believes are too strict or inflexible. She cited a recent Maryland case where a boy was suspended from school for chewing a Pop Tart into the shape of a gun.

(6,960 posts)That a state legislature has to take time to mandate commons sense into public schools is the 'scandal' exemplified by this story.
Yes, all over the country paranoid, empty-headed school administrators have suspended little kids for things as innocuous and silly as biting Pop Tarts or sandwiches into gun shapes.
I heard on the radio news yesterday that even Attorney General Holder has finally said something about ending this stupidity of 'zero tolerance' that has penalized children with draconian punishment for what amounts to playing.

(60,334 posts)And that requires a law to allow a kid to chew food into "gun shapes"

(4,407 posts)And now I'm in a quantum superposition state of being severly depressed, incredulous at just how fucked up this is on all possible sides of the argument, pissed off that a law is even needed, and also pissed off that guns are even more protected. In pop tarts no less!
At this point I'm rooting for Yellowstone to just blow the whole fucking place up!

(8,747 posts)I used to draw Science Fiction battle scenes. Like flying saucers invading, and humans fighting back. Earth vs. The Flying Saucers type stuff. Or WWII battle scenes. It wasn't very artistic, but it was fun, and I did it just for my own entertainment, not even to show to anyone. At the end, I would toss it in the trash.
A few years ago here on DU, I told that to one member who claimed she was currently a teacher. I asked here what she would do if I were her student. She said something to the effect that she would have a discussion with the school counselor, administrators, and my parents over "my violent tendencies." That is the kind of crap kids face today in schools, from people who are supposedly "professional" educators.
Fuck Zero Tolerance.

(25,919 posts)There wasn't actually a gun involved. Like, at all. And considering the role of Pop Tarts, there wasn't any food involved either. Technically.

(34,825 posts)the moment a "gun" became involved is when they sprang into action. we more than likely wouldn't even been reading this if the kid chewed his pop tart into the shape of a knife and had been suspended.
chewed his pop tart into the shape of a pot leaf. The kid's home would have been invaded and the parents arrested.
It's not about the zero tolerance standard, it's about the gun.

(6,665 posts)As Eric Holder has just tried to explain, zero tolerance policies are counter effective and unfair. Rather than beat her own drum about her very specific and controversial issue, she needs to build bridges and get on Holder's band wagon.

(53,661 posts)I'm glad everyone in every school in the state are well on their way to a college or vocational career and may even be world travelers or the POTUS.
Just as soon as they pass their daily clases on the fine art of chomping their daily ration of PopTarts into artistic shapes and dribble crumbles and jelly all over their school work.
Oh, what am I thinking? It's how we get to our final destination as citizens of the Idiocracy.
Thanks, GOP!
