French first lady hospitalized after affair report

Source: AP

The woman considered France's first lady has been hospitalized after a report the president is having an affair with an actress.

Valerie Trierweiler's chief of staff, Patrice Biancone, confirmed Sunday the 48-year-old journalist who lives with President Francois Hollande has been hospitalized since Friday.

Biancone said she was hospitalized for "rest and a few tests" and is expected to leave the hospital Monday.

Hollande has never married. Rumors have long circulated that he might have a lover.

1. Francois Hollande’s partner Valerie Trierweiler faces tense future
Sun Jan 12, 2014, 01:41 PM

Paris: France’s First Lady Valerie Trierweiler was on Saturday facing the prospect of becoming the first in history to be kicked out of the Elysee Palace.

It follows humiliating revelations that her partner, President Francois Hollande, has “fallen in love” with a woman almost 20 years his junior.

Hollande’s relationship with actress Julie Gayet, 41, was exposed by a series of pictures in French Closer magazine, which show him travelling to see her on a moped.

But beyond a new romance, opponents claim the scandal exposes publicly funded deceit, security lapses, and the huge cost of a first lady who no longer has any legitimacy.

6. A nuance that will be lost in France on anybody younger than 70.

My sister has been with her partner for 30 years. They have two children. Except for not signing a paper, everybody considers them as married, they have the same rights for any social programs except taxes. And she is not the exception, but more like the rule.

I am quite surprised Hollande himself would have that much attraction for women (proof that power attracts), this issue about being married or not is very much a non issue.

She must be very skilled to get an older gentleman to ride a moped to see her.

5. After the way she has treated Segolene Royal, I frankly don't care.

I have family in France. Many French don't consider Trierweiler to be their "first lady", just the president's lover. As with Christie, they are both learning a tough lesson: What goes around, comes around.

9. It's not like his polling numbers could suffer much

Hollande could look at Bush Lite's numbers toward the end of his second term and actually be envious.

anyway my take ATM is 1) where the heck else is VT going to go, 2) number 3 is very fetching, and 3) the polling in France seems to favor Hollande and #3, who have apparently both brought legal actions, in considering this a private not public affair, per i-télé anyway
