New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Monday vetoed a bill that would have allowed people who had a sex change procedure to modify their gender on their birth certificates, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
State law already required the Health Department to issue new birth certificates to people who have undergone sex change surgery, but this legislation would have extended that ability to people who have undergone hormone therapy.
Christie said the bill would have allowed for "fraud, deception and abuse, and should therefore be closely scrutinized and sparingly approved," according to the Star-Ledger
By vetoing the bill, Christie drew a line on where he stands on LGBT issues. In October, the governor decided not to appeal the New Jersey Supreme Court decision that allowed same-sex marriages in the state. In August, he also signed a bill that banned gay conversion therapy.
