US lashes 'Israel comment' on John Kerry

The US has condemned as "offensive" reported comments by Israel's defence minister about Secretary of State John Kerry's Middle East peace initiative.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the alleged comments by Moshe Yaalon were "inappropriate" given America's support to Israel's security.

Her statement was a rare rebuke to America's close ally in the region.

Mr Yaalon was earlier quoted as saying Mr Kerry was acting out of "misplaced obsession and messianic fervour".

If he had either, or both of those, he would be president today.

It seems like an odd choice of words, but I'm not sure why it is called "offensive".
