'Mistakes Were Clearly Made': Christie's State of the State Speech
Borrowing a long-time favorite phrase of politicians who wish to take responsibility without actually taking responsibility --- a phrase used famously and repeatedly by Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal --- NJ Gov. Chris Christie (R) admitted that "mistakes were clearly made" in his State of the State addressed being delivered in Trenton at this moment.
The beleaguered Governor, however, did not identify who exactly made those "mistakes" in his ongoing "BridgeGate" scandal...

(3,426 posts)The key in the connection is simple really.
Nixon summed it up in a sentence.
He said- (It's not the crime that gets you, it's the cover up.)
In effect thats about it.
That to a given it stands to reason Christie is clearly his own worst enemy.
So, Before The Fall ! And everything they do,will do and say and have done to cover their tracks.
It's almost too simple a connection to believe.
Repetitious cycle perhaps ? Every 30 ,or 40 years ?
Perhaps it's time to reread the Nixon play book ! No wait, it's an every day thing for the republican party. I can practically see it from my back porch !
There's a new donut about to be introduced ,it's the chris christie !
I hear it's made to be toasted.

If it's there I wasn't aware it was there until I read about it same as everybody else ! The christie cream doughnut is not to be confused with or compared to a bridge over troubled waters but stand assured it is loaded with all kinds of stuff on the inside ! Nobody looks to close at whats in there because they are all too busy eating it.
I took that last line straight out of the Chris Christie play book but I think he is wrong about that !
on edit ,not sure if donut isn't correct as in do what is nuts although what I may have been thinking had not to do with what was said in words !
Revenge motivation does tend to drive those motivated by revenge to do what is outrageous or nuts.Otherwise the unthinkable under the heading of dare to defy by any or all despicable means.
Nixon talked about figuratively cutting off one arm than the other in the David Frost interview just prior to his resignation having been signed, sealed and delivered.
It might be interesting to see how Christie wears it on his sleeves as he comes close to the edge before he falls. Yes I think so.

(904 posts)...probably.
And he's probably tried 'em all.
Governor Chrispy Christie (R-Krispy Kreme). It's the highest office he'll ever attain (if there's a God.)

(47,545 posts)the great "past exonerative tense." Borrowed from Watergate "mistakes were made" may be used by almost everyone--and followed by "I only wish I knew who had made them."

1. Not realizing that since it involves more than one state, the Port Authority of New York AND New Jersey can be investigated federally. You thought that promoting the PA contact who initiated the traffic closing and turning your chief of staff into the new state attorney general would shut down any investigation on the state level, and that would be that.
2. Not putting the nomination of your chief of staff on hold immediately and calling for a federal investigation yourself. That would have made it at least look like you wanted the most objective investigation possible.
3. Complaining to NY governor Andrew Cuomo that his executive director at the Port Authority was being too nosy. That indisputably makes you part of the coverup (if not the crime itself) and confirms that you knew there was no Ft. Lee traffic study.
4. Having your crew -- I mean, senior staff -- do their email communicating privately rather than on the government servers to avoid detection because they would have been on public record. I think this was done with your knowledge and consent because if you were innocent, you would have fired them -- not allowed them to resign -- for that alone, and at least a month sooner.
5. And here's your biggest mistake of all: successfully cultivating such a vindictive, despotic, lying, bullying cult of personality that the idea of Bridge(t)-gate happening without your consent brings an entirely new dimension to the concept of cognitive dissonance. All whom you've victimized and terrorized are creeping out into the sunlight now, and their stories reveal a pattern of behavior that puts the possibility of your being innocent light years beyond a reasonable doubt.
And I thought that Bon Jovi were the only New Jerseyites who could give me so much pleasure.

(904 posts)...neither is it unique.
Look into George Norcross III (sadly, a Democrat), who supported Chrispy Christie in his reelection bid. Boss Norcross can probably be likened, in a way, to a modern Richard Daley, in terms of his control of New Jersey politics and his methods.
