Landfill gas sends 63 from Cortland Elementary to hospital

Source: Daily Chronicle

CORTLAND – Sixty-three patients went to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb after gas released from a Waste Management landfill got caught in Cortland Elementary School's ventilation system, officials said.

Michael Kulisz, chief medical officer for KishHealth System, suggests parents monitor their children for headaches, nausea and vomiting for about 24 hours. Fresh air is the first course of treatment, but parents should use their judgment about whether they need to bring children into the emergency room to be given oxygen.

The nausea students and staff reported feeling Tuesday morning was due to low levels of carbon monoxide, Kulisz said. By 3 p.m., at least 10 of the 63 people had been released from the hospital, a spokeswoman said.

Friends and relatives of Cortland Elementary School students and staff can call 815-748-6854 to find out the status of their child.

There's a Dekalb county there too.

I really wish the specific state was mentioned in the Headline, so irritating.

... or put a landfill right next to the school. Either way, this should not have been allowed. I thought our zoning regulations were a little stricter than that. I hope those kids are alright.

DeKalb is west of Chicago about 60 miles (if I recall correctly). Cortland is just east of DeKalb.

A farm house is mislabeled as Cortland Elementary School and a third of a mile from the actual school. The school is 0.91 miles from "DeKalb County Refuse-Derived Fuel", just off the Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway (Interstate 88).
