Olympics official Mario Pescante: Gay athletes on U.S. delegation "absurd"

Source: CBS

ROME -- A senior Italian IOC member criticized the United States on Wednesday for including openly gay athletes in its official delegation for next month's Sochi Olympics.

"It's absurd that a country like that sends four lesbians to Russia just to demonstrate that in their country gay rights have (been established)," Mario Pescante said at an Italian Olympic Committee meeting in Milan on Wednesday, in comments widely reported by Italian media. "The games should not be an occasion and a stage to promote rights that sports supports daily."

The Italian Olympic Committee would not confirm or deny Pescante's comments, but his speech was reported by the Gazzetta dello Sport and the ANSA news agency.

Asked for clarification later by The Associated Press, Pescante said he is not against gays.

We will only break through the wall of bigotry by confronting it, no matter how ugly or threatening.

and + 1,000,000 to the picture in your tagline. We have the right to send anyone we want and the delegation is full of very talented athletes.

whether this guy speaks for his country. Realistically, I mean -- not "officially," whatever the latter might mean to the IOC.

Those along with the terrorism concerns only solidify my opinion that they never should have been awarded the games.

27. IOC vs The USOC

This isn't about us sending openly gay athletes to the Sochi games it is about the IOC hatred of USOC for the fact that McDonalds, Coca Cola and other American brand names are sponsors for the United States Olympic Team first and then the IOC second. The U.S. is still the only Olympic team that is not funded by the government and so the USOC relies on these sponsorships to defray some of the costs. The IOC is a bunch of crooks and they want their share and that is why we didn't get the 2016 games in Chicago. We had a sterling bid and we already had most of the infrastructure in place. we lost out in the 1st round. Also the only modern Olympics to make money are Los Angles and Atlanta in the summer and Salt Lake City in the winter. Mario Pescante is just a mouth piece for Jague Rogge.

As for the 1936 games yes Jesse Owens did run and win 3 gold medals but the real shame of those games is that Marty Glickman and another teammate that I cannot remember were scheduled to run the 4 by 100 relay. The American Track coach removed Glickman and his teammate because Avrel Brundidge did not want two Jewish runners to win the gold medal and rub it in Hitler's face. Brundidge spent most of those Olympics in Hitler's personal box with either Hitler or Goering in attendance. It was a travesty and Brundidge never apologized for what he did. HBO has a wonderful documentary about Marty Glickman and it is well worth watching.
