Ryan Tannehill's Wife Leaves Semi-Automatic Rifle In Rental Car
Source: Huffington Post
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) Authorities say the wife of Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill left a rifle in the back of a rental SUV in South Florida earlier this month.
The Broward Sheriff's Office reported Wednesday that Lauren Tannehill rented a Nissan Rogue from EZ Rental Car at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport the afternoon of Jan. 4. She returned about two hours later to swap the Rogue for a different car, but authorities say she left behind an LMT AR-15, which was secured in a case.
That same night, the car was rented to another woman, who found the gun and contacted EZ Rental Car. Employees told her to turn it over to police, which she did.

My spouse is a tad more responsible with things that can punch holes in humans, however.
I don't understand this line from the article: "secured in a case".
Secured? It's a zippered soft nylon rifle case. Secure from what? An angry mouse could get into that thing.

'Responsible gun owner' is becoming as elastic and meaningless a term as 'freedom' and 'liberty'...

People leave shit behind. Big whoop.
Oh, wait - this one is different because "EEK! Scary looking gunz!"
Don't you people have anything better to do than scour the internet looking for isolated "gotcha" examples of people doing stupid things with firearms?
I'll see your single instance of someone leaving a firearm behind in a car and raise you tens of thousands of times where a firearm user took the weapon to the range, fired it at targets without hurting anyone, and somehow managed to get it all the way back home without shooting it wildly out the window in a drive by, using it in a road rage incident, or leaving it in the car, then clean it without firing it at himself, a family member, the dog, or the neighbor's house, then locking it in the gun safe so his kids can't get to it!

(9,350 posts)I do think you might be joking and just forgot to put the sarcasm icon in your post. $2.5 million and $4 million violins cannot be used to kill multiple in a matter of minutes. The worst thing that can happen when a person leaves an expensive violin somewhere is that whoever finds it can sell it on the black market and get rich. I guess someone can use it to hit someone over the head, but I think most people would either choose to give the violin back to its owner, or sell it for the money. I doubt one can get money for a broken violin. The worst thing that can happen if someone leaves an semi-automatic rifle somewhere is that someone can take it and kill up to about a dozen people.
You said you would see the single instance of a person leaving a gun in a car with all the times someone used a gun properly. Well, I will see you your argument and raise you all the instances that show up every day of a child getting hold of a loaded weapon that was left out in the open and shooting another child with that weapon. I missed the news report of the five year old who found Yo Yo Ma's violin and then smashed his sister's head in with the violin.
I am not against guns. I think the are fine and fine to own. However, for you to compare someone leaving a gun in a car to someone leaving a violin in a taxi or a subway, if you are serious, is just ridiculous. Violins left unattended can cause very little harm. On the other, hand a gun left unattended can cause great harm. People are right to mainly dismiss people leaving expensive items behind while allowing their mouths to drop to the floor over a gun being left in a rental car.

(836 posts)That sound was the point flying right over your head.
The OP tag line was "Gun owners are so responsible-y."
The OP was attacking the meme "responsible gun owner" and I don't disagree on that. Leaving your rifle behind in a rental car is a knucklehead thing to do.
Lots of stuff gets left in cars. Even multimillion dollar musical instruments. It is likely that the musicians responsible for the instruments felt a serious responsibility toward them. Regardless, they got left behind, but no one makes snarky posts like violin owners are so "responsible-y."
Please spend the rest of the afternoon looking for multiple daily examples of child on child shootings, then compile it on a list to post in GD. You will get the inevitable dozen recs from the eek scary gunz crowd, five replies on topic, and fifty replies whether it belongs in GD or not.
Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of children of firearms owners will go blissfully about their day not having shot each other.
