Chile asks Australia for extradition of woman accused of torture, muder during Pinochet's dictatorship
Date January 17, 2014 - 11:42AM
Chile's Supreme Court is asking Australia to extradite a woman accused of involvement in torture and murder during Chile's 1973-1990 military dictatorship.
The court requested the extradition of Adriana Rivas on Thursday.
She is wanted for her role in the 1976 murder of a Communist Party leader who was held in a secret prison before he was suffocated and thrown into the ocean.
Australia's Attorney-General's Department has declined to comment on the extradition request.
''It is the longstanding policy of the Australian government not to disclose whether or not it has made or received an extradition request before a person is arrested or brought before a court in accordance with such a request,'' the department said in a statement.
