GOP former CA Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado pulls out of 2014 governor’s race

Saying he has concluded that now is not my time, former Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado ended his gubernatorial campaign Thursday in the Central Coast town where he began his political career 20 years ago.
... In prepared remarks, the 46-year-old Maldonado said his withdrawal by no means suggests that Im giving up or giving in. But it was an acknowledgement that the campaign he launched in April to bring a new face to state politics had failed to take hold.
... Since November, Maldonado had not collected a single donation over $5,000, according to records filed with the secretary of states office.
A Public Policy Institute of California poll taken last month showed him with just 7 percent support among likely voters, less than half of that for conservative Assemblyman Tim Donnelly of Twin Peaks (San Bernardino County), a Tea Party favorite who is now the only Republican officially in the governors race.
