MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered new assurances to gay athletes and fans attending the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics next month. Yet he defended Russia's anti-gay law by equating gays with pedophiles and said Russia needs to "cleanse" itself of homosexuality if it wants to increase its birth rate.

Putin's comments in an interview broadcast Sunday with Russian and foreign television stations showed the wide gulf between the perception of homosexuality in Russia versus the West.

A Russian law passed last year banning "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations" among minors has caused an international outcry.

Putin refused to answer a question from the BBC on whether he believes that people are born gay or become gay. The Russian law, however, suggests that information about homosexuality can influence a child's sexual orientation.

It's definitely not the old Soviet Union over there. Americans should wake up and do some proper checking. They have malls that blow away american malls, amazing service in their restaurants, Unemployment dropped by 5 times under Putin, he is putting the young people to work, roads are being built, corruption is being weeded out, crime is down by 60% in the last ten years. Russia is on the upswing people. I've been over there 7 times. DU'ers have no idea what Russia is like and reading these posts is laughable. It's far from perfect but it has advanced quite far in two decades considering there was 2 economic crashes since then. It is still on the upswing. Smart people know this.

As to homosexuality, etc., it seems to me that labeling the KGB as more of an overall menace to mankind is probably correct, since most likely most gays just want to be left the f**k alone, just like the rest of us. And just as an aside, I don't think we can consider the KGB as being as much of a threat to mankind as the CIA or any number of US espionage agencies.
