Hamtramck relief worker killed in Afghanistan attack

Basra Hassan was dedicated to feeding children in one of the worlds poorest nations, but her passion was snuffed out Friday when the Hamtramck woman was one of 21 people killed in a bombing at a popular restaurant in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Hassan, 59, who worked as a nutrition specialist for UNICEF, was one of three American citizens killed in the Taliban attack that was one of the deadliest against foreign civilians since the war started there 13 years ago.
Its a very sad day, UNICEF spokeswoman Sarah Crowe said. Ive met (Hassan) several times, and knew her as a wonderful, warm, caring, positive human being. She was very passionate about bringing nutrition to children, and her work in Afghanistan is a testament to her dedication.
