Winter storm set to 'go bananas' across Northeast

Source: NBC News

A wintry double whammy is descending on the Northeast on Tuesday, bringing as much as a foot of snow and another blast of arctic air.

The latest blow to a weather-beaten region promises to snarl airports and interstates, has closed schools and shuttered much of the nation's capital. Initially forecast to be a modest blurt of cold weather, the system is now packing a real punch.

“Every once in while these little winter storms go bananas, and we think this might be the one,” said Kevin Roth, a lead meteorologist with the Weather Channel.

mildly crazy. Sorry, I just went bananas for a minute. I thought he was going to go bananas.

to become very angry She'll go bananas if she sees the room in this state.

to become very emotional I just went bananas when she told me she wanted to move out.

For christ's sake, just report the weather forecast, we don't need to give snow storms names and we don't need to describe them like they are someone who is crazy, angry or emotional.

That's without windchill. Chickadees are fearless and flew right into the scoop while I was filling the feeder.

They are a sweet and charming bastion of hope in an otherwise bleak and heartless world.

We've only had a few chickadees and nuthatches at our feeders. Last year we had swarms of redpolls by this time, but I haven't seen one this year. We did have a flock of about 20 robins at the feeders a couple days ago, which I've never seen here before.

if you can, get some free flowing water out for them. They need water just like you do, and they can't work the faucet. Everything's iced up...

I have about 30 chickadees, a dozen goldfinches, a few juncos, sparrows, and half a dozen blue jays. Woodpeckers include one pileated, a downy and a hairy.

They're spoiled to the extreme here, since I don't have any pets. Fortunately it's a short feeding season (Nov-March). I'm in a hardwood stand that borders a creek, and the birds and wildlife are truly amazing here. Great Horned Owls, Red Tail Hawk, Wood Thrush, and Whip-poor-wills are regulars during the summer months.

Excellent advice regarding water. They love their hot tub in the winter!

with no end in sight. It's predicted to be 45 degrees later this week. I think it's all part of the same stubborn weather pattern that's causing California's drought.

(sigh!) This winter is a lot like the one of 1993-1994 in my area (NYC metro area). We had something like 17 snowfalls that season.

Today is our first day of classes, but they got cancelled because the schools shut down. They didn't shut down until noon, though.

I tried to make it to school but the Pkway was jammed up. Made it home, though, after an hour of back roads. Roads are very bad.

Shorts and t-shirt. We'll get ours though. Supposed to be near freezing for the next 4 nights or so. I have great memories of snowstorms from growing up in north Jersey. Sledding, mini-skiing, bombing cars with snowballs, etc.
