Arizona State University officials suspended its chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon after the fraternity threw a "MLK Black Party" over the weekend, a school representative told CBS 5 Arizona.
At the unofficial, off-campus party, students dressed in basketball jerseys, displayed gang signs and drank from watermelon cups, according to photos obtained by CBS.
ASU condemned the party, calling the event "misguided" and "offensive," and said the fraternity, which was already on social probation, held the party off campus without university permission.
"ASU has one of the most diverse student bodies of any major university in the country, and it is unfortunate that a few misguided individuals held an offensive party at a time when ASU, the state and the nation are celebrating Dr. King's achievements and legacy. The university will not tolerate this kind of behavior," a statement from the university reads.

Is anyone else tired of their frat-boy act?
I'm so weary of it I'd love to see their asses sent to jail.
Hell, find some appropriate charge.

(340 posts)The statement makes sense to me. "Flush out" means to force something out of hiding (as in "The dogs were sent into the woods to flush out the pheasants" . It's use in this context is a bit unusual, but the meaning is still clear.

(32,019 posts)I bet taxpayers who complain about "WELFARE MOOCHERS" have no problem subsidizing "education" of morons like these ignorant shithead frat boys. Wonder why. Because...they've got the right pigmentation?
I am a college student right now. It is so annoying that I have to co-exist on campus with ignorant boobs like these who are intellectually, culturally, and socially CLUELESS. WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY?
Let me tell these stupid boys (I refuse to address them as men for a reason) something. If you can't understand what is wrong with this party, you do not belong in an institution of higher education. Full stop.
I think high school diplomas need CULTURAL LITERACY. This is the god damn 21st century. America isn't going to be a white majority nation much sooner. Yes, people with different skin pigmentations and facial features deserve respect too. New generations of Americans will have to fuckin' deal with it. White entitlement mentality has to go. But with the "basic education" of No Child Left Behind fucking over the public schools for a decade and more under both Bush and Obama it's gonna be a damn long time for stupid "MLK Frat Parties" to be extinct.

but how is this different from Westboro protests?
It's free speech, however obnoxious.

(9,760 posts)Are you saying the college has no right to discipline them?
bucolic_frolic
(43,141 posts)and the college should do as they should to produce educated, tolerant, unbigotted
graduates.
If it were held off campus but not under the auspices of the frat then it's free free speech
The college should discipline, but they must realize that there are a small percent of the
population that cannot be educated to be tolerant and will believe what they want to believe
I'm not supporting the frat party, if that's what you're asking.

(55,445 posts)because let's be honest; some major university somewhere has a greek organization have some really distasteful "ethnic themed" party...It's like clockwork 2-3 times per semester...
Can anyone even explain to me what the 'appeal' of these parties are?

(Reuters) - Arizona State University said on Thursday it had permanently severed ties with a campus fraternity whose members threw a party with a "racially-insensitive" theme that has drawn outrage from leaders in the black community and beyond.
The large public university said it revoked the chapter status of Tau Kappa Epsilon and is investigating students for policy violations for the event on January 19, a day before a U.S. holiday honoring civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.
"It is unfortunate that a few individuals held an offensive party at a time when ASU, the state and the nation were celebrating Dr. King's achievements and legacy," the school said in a statement.
Pictures circulated on social media websites showed white students dressed in sports jerseys and baggy clothes, flashing gang signs and drinking out of watermelon cups. The behavior drew swift and harsh condemnation.
