CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Federal and state investigators learned today that an additional chemical that wasn't previously identified was in the tank that leaked on Jan. 9 at the Freedom Industries tank farm just upstream from West Virginia American Water's regional drinking water intake.
Company officials told investigators that the "Crude MCHM" that spilled also contained a product called "PPH," which stands for polyglycol ethers, according to the U.S. Chemical Safety Board.
Daniel Horowitz, managing director of the CSB, said that investigators were told the chemical was added to the Crude MCHM mixture at a level of about 5.6 percent.

Eastman Chemical Co., which made the Crude MCHM for Freedom Industries, says that the chemical 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol makes up 68 percent to 89 percent of Crude MCHM. The Eastman MSDS also shows, though, that Crude MCHM includes six other ingredients: 4-(methoxymethyl)cyclohexanemethanol, water, methyl 4-methylcyclohexanecarboxylate, dimethyl 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate, methanol and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol.

Horowitz said the Crude MCHM mixture contained more than 5% PPH, which according to Freedom Industries has "low oral toxicity."
