GOP congressman’s book: ‘The wife is to voluntarily submit’ to her husband
Source: Washington Post
Rep. Steve Pearce's (R-N.M.) memoir, "Just Fly the Plane, Stupid!" was released last month. Its publication -- and his acknowledgment in the book of the controversial nature of the submission debate -- come as the Republican Party reevaluates how it talks to and about women.
In the book, Pearce recounts his rise to owning an oil-field service company and winning election to Congress. In the book, the Vietnam War veteran says that both the military chain of command and the family unit need a structure in which everyone plays his or her role.
...snip...
"The wife is to voluntarily submit, just as the husband is to lovingly lead and sacrifice," he writes, citing the Bible. "The husbands part is to show up during the times of deep stress, take the leadership role and be accountable for the outcome, blaming no one else."

(33,982 posts)I got that whole fucking spiel when working out our wedding vows with the pastor of the church we wanted to get married in. (Not members.)
We left that 'obey' shit out when we actually said our vows. I think he noticed but fuck him, we were renting the church, nothing more. Not members.

(6,262 posts)He just might be in for a rude awakening by a seemingly docile wife who doesn't like this characterization. Here's to her consciousness being raised by the reaction to this stupid, stupid comment.

Obviously this book was not co-authored by the good congressman's wife.

(3,596 posts)there are many, many "good" Christian women who believe all that crap about the woman being subservient to her husband and doing his bidding.
It relieves them of any obligation to be responsible for themselves or be culpable for their mistakes. The "hubby" will take care of them.
This belief system is often taught young girls at an early age. Their Daddy is their protector in their adolescence and Daddy will approve or disapprove of her husband. After marriage her husband is the master of the house.

(15,220 posts)I can't believe that women...any women...can be so foolish, but there are plenty of them out there who believe this stuff AND decide to live by it.
It's bad enough when a man is trying to peddle that crap; it's even worse when women voluntarily do it. Candace Cameron Bure was in the news last week over this same stuff.
Un BE lieveable!

Edit - Now that I think about it, I probably shouldn't make light of this because it is very serious that someone in a position of power has this mindset.

(4,110 posts)If you wonder what kind of women would support him, let me share with you that down here in southcentral NM, a woman state rep tried to pass a law making it illegal for a woman who has been raped to have an abortion...that would be destroying the evidence, don't you know?
Our second annual "We Trust Women Commemoration & Celebration of Roe v Wade" had a dozen or so rallyers, but the anti-choice vigil for unborn 'children' had 150 attend.
We fight hard to support Dem candidates and shit like this just fires me up.
