Christie And Exec Tied To Scandal Both Have Long History With Same Charity
Source: Talking Points Memo
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) and a key executive for a firm linked to the latest allegations against his administration have more than a decade of deep ties to the same charity.
Both Christie and Rockefeller Group Executive Vice President Leslie "Les" Smith have served on the board of Daytop New Jersey, a nonprofit substance abuse treatment and education program with facilities throughout the state. They have also attended and chaired Daytop events together.
On Saturday, Hoboken, N.J. Mayor Dawn Zimmer alleged Christie administration officials threatened to withhold Sandy aid to her city unless she approved a real estate project planned for land partially owned by Rockefeller Group.
Smith leads Rockefeller Group's development efforts in New Jersey. He has also donated $2,000 to Christie since 2009.

(17,469 posts)I wonder if this charity gets any tax dollar from the state to treat substance abusers?

(10,597 posts)... especially under those non-profit orgs with such worthy causes. First red flag to me is that they are both on "The Board." Should be easy enough for some crack New Jersey investigative reporters to dig up the history of this 10-year old 501c(3) or (4), such as meetings and events they showed up at. And the organization tax returns are easy enough to compile, to find yearly donation totals and how much was used for the administration of the different "Daytop" events throughout the state, i.e. the grant total for the different Daytop branches.
How many people did they actually serve per year? It's a pandora's box.

(2,419 posts)as many bad things be tied to Christie, this is not one of them. It shows the relationship between Christie and Smith, but Daytop is a legitimate treatment program. They've had a presence in Mendham that pre-dates Christie being governor. They've helped an awful lot of people in the surrounding communities, including classmates of my children. Its not a "front" for any group. Neither are on the Board of Trustees now. http://www.daytopnj.org/board.php

(48,727 posts)that there has been a long, close relationship between Christie and this Rockefeller Group exec whose business interests in Hoboken Christie's people reportedly had been pressuring Mayor Dawn Zimmer to approve.
