WASHINGTON President Barack Obama on Friday signed into law Rep. Lee Terry's legislation to continue the federal poison control program.
The Omaha Republican hailed the five-year reauthorization of the program that provides grants to poison centers, pays for a national education campaign and maintains a national toll-free number.
The trained professionals who staff the centers offer expert advice and peace of mind to nearly three million families each year at the moment the unthinkable happens and a loved one ingests a poisonous substance, Terry said in a press release. My legislation will also provide much-needed cost savings by eliminating unnecessary trips to the emergency room.
The bill would authorize up to $30 million a year for the program, although Terry has said Congress typically spends less than that.

Last I knew Rep. Terry's only other bill was naming a post office. He has been there since the Nov. 98 election.
