Israeli general says al Qaeda's Syria fighters set up in Turkey

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Some of the al Qaeda militants going to fight in Syria have bases in neighboring Turkey and can easily access Europe from the NATO member state, Israel's military intelligence chief said on Wednesday.

Major-General Aviv Kochavi, presenting a map of the Middle East marked with areas of al Qaeda presence, told a security conference al Qaeda fighters from around the world entered Syria weekly, "but they do not stay" there.

The map showed three al Qaeda bases inside Turkey.

A spokesman for the Turkish Foreign Ministry had no immediate comment, but Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly denied Turkey is providing shelter or backing to al Qaeda-linked groups in Syria.

1. Turkish military strikes al Qaeda-linked rebels in Syria: media

(Reuters) - The Turkish armed forces attacked a convoy of al Qaeda-linked rebel vehicles in Syria in retaliation for cross-border fire on Tuesday, destroying three vehicles, Turkish media said on Wednesday.

Turkish troops opened fire on Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) positions in northern Syria after a mortar shell fired from Syria landed in Turkish territory during clashes between ISIL and the Free Syrian Army, broadcaster NTV reported.

It said a pick-up truck, a lorry and a bus were destroyed in the Turkish retaliation on Tuesday evening. There were no reports of casualties and NTV did not say exactly where along the border the attack occurred.

CNN Turk said Turkish forces retaliated after light arms fire was directed at two Turkish military vehicles. The Turkish military was not immediately available to comment.

MONTREUX, JANUARY 22 - US Secretary of State John Kerry said Wednesday that "President Obama has never taken any option off the table in dealing with Syria," including military intervention.

"He made a decision to use force in the case of chemical weapons. (That case) got solved," he said, warning that the option still remains depending on what happens in the future. The head of US diplomacy was speaking at a press conference on the first day of the international peace conference for Syria held in the Swiss town of Montreux. (ANSAmed).

6. Stopped Clock Syndrome: that's actually more or less accurate

The zionist regime cannot be relied on for most of its commentaries on this subject (except in internal security documents gloating about how the Sunni-Shia conflict enhances their own internal security), but this is quite true. All factions of the anti-Syrian militants--from the self-styled and largely crumbling "Free Syrian Army", an-Nusrah, the Islamic Front umbrella org, and ISIS--seem to have some level of infrastructure in Turkey, which has been an enthusiastic supporter of the so-called "revolutionary" cause from its outset. The Turks and Qataris have collaborated to boost the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated factions in the "pro-west" SNC. The total collapse of Qatari foreign policy last year (and its quiet, if seething, resubmission to Saudi princes) saw the Turkish military briefly triangulate itself with various extreme factions that do not collaborate with Saudi Arabia, but these forces have more or less quietly realigned.

However on a related note, it would seem that ISIS has outstayed its limited welcome, as it has recently come under attack by the Turkish military:

Is there a problem calling the country by it's rightful name? Isn't Zionist regime what they call it on Stormfront?

I am familiar with the principle of red flags before bulls, but... I said far more interesting things in that paragraph, I encourage you to consider some of them and we might be able to discuss actual events. If you need the big words explained to you, I will be available for the next few hours and I have plenty of crayons on hand.

I'm not sure what they call it on Stormfront: the "white power" assholes annoy me more than most (no small feat), so I have never actually been there. Since you appear to have some baseline of familiarity with that jolly crew, why don't you prepare a report for me and have it on my desk by COB Monday? Thanks.

You actually have a pretty long history of hit-and-run poutrage with me. I'm starting to think that this is the only card in your deck.
