Sen. Menendez Sets Up Defense Fund, Pays Law Firm $250,000 For Justice, Ethics Investigations

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON — New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez's political campaign paid a law firm $250,000 in December for legal costs related to Justice Department and Senate Ethics Committee investigations into his ties to a major donor, according to disclosure forms filed Friday. The Democrat has also set up a legal trust to raise money as the investigations continue.

The forms show the campaign also reimbursed Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen for an additional $11,250 for a 2011 flight on Melgen's private plane.

Menendez's relationship with Melgen prompted the Senate Ethics and Justice Department investigations. Menendez had previously reimbursed Melgen nearly $60,000 for other flights. The issue exploded in late January 2013, after the FBI conducted a search of Melgen's West Palm Beach offices.

Menendez was forced to repeatedly deny reports that he flew on Melgen's plane for trysts with prostitutes. None of the allegations were substantiated. But the issue consumed Menendez just months after he won re-election and was preparing to become the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

he's innocent?

He's a Democrat, well that's good, but he is a hawk. We'd be better off with someone else.

investigating Sen Menendez about three weeks before election day when Menendez' ran for Senate. Shortly after his announcement, Christie was removed from Bush's to-be-fired list. Nothing came of the investigation, in fact many still regard it as nothing more than a political stunt to help the Republican party. Shortly after Hurricaine Sandy, when Christie was being discussed as a Presidential contender, Sen. Menendez was investigated for ties he had to a long time friend and supporter in Miami as well as hiring prostitutes in the Dominican Republic while there at his friend's house. The FBI eventually got involved, as did CREW and the Senate. The right wing media had a field day. When the story about him hiring the prostitutes wasn't getting enough attention, a second "anonymous" caller gave a tip that the girls were underage. Now, the right wing media started saying he was a pedophile. Problem is, the girls who claimed to be the prostitutes were eventually found and testified that they were paid to make up the whole thing. (I think that story was an attempt to smear Menendez because if Christie were the GOP fav for 2016 the earlier story would come out).

Now Christie is in trouble again, and guess what? A negative story about Bob Menendez is being reported. One that isn't mentioning anything that wasn't mentioned last February/March. Of course, the story also doesn't tell you that part of the defense fund was for allegations by the prostitutes. That might make people ask questions about what happened to the story about the prostitutes.

While I think Menendez is a total d-bag for the Iran Sanctions bill, and will likely never forgive him for that, it doesn't mean that he deserves what Christie has done to him. He is truly Christie's Benghazi. Every time the Republican party/Christie get in trouble in New Jersey they make up a new story about Menendez. More Christie politicking.

From the article in Forbes Magazine titled Who Framed Senator Bob Menendez?

The Washington Post is reporting that one of the alleged escorts who accused New Jersey Democrat Robert Menendez of having paid her for sex has told Dominican Republic police that, while she was indeed paid, it was not for sex but to fabricate the story.

According to an affidavit executed by the woman and acquired by the Post, the woman—and her colleague—were approached by an unnamed attorney who offered a sum of money to read a prepared script containing allegations that the two had provided sexual favors to the New Jersey Senator while he was vacationing in the Dominican Republic. Unbeknownst to the women, the reading was then captured on videotape.

The affidavit also confirms that the accuser has never so much as met Senator Menendez.

Authorities have been successful in contacting the lawyer who allegedly approached the women who reports that he had also been approached by another lawyer who paid him to execute the assignment.

While the woman in question was not the original ‘tipster’ who first claimed that the Senator had paid for sex with an under aged woman, the alleged purpose of the videotaped recording was to bolster the original allegation and add fuel to the accusations.

I hope the FBI lets us know who set up this smear campaign. Clearly the attorney doesn't have attorney client privilege if he was committing an illegal act by hiring the girls to lie.

The get the dirt on people and then extort them to get what they want. In this case it looks like Menendez is being blackmailed.

One has to ask, what is it that Menendez can do to put a stop to the current Christie investigation?

to pay those women to lie. Also, Menendez went public right away and demanded an investigation.

I think the motive of Christie with the prostitute scandal was to discredit Menendez and lessen the fallout from the election time bogus investigation. Ditto the investigation into his friend. (they were tied together).
