Washington (CNN) - What a difference two months makes.
In late November and early December, in the wake of Chris Christie's landslide re-election victory, the Republican governor from New Jersey was riding high in the polls.
Christie topped the other potential GOP 2016 White House hopefuls in surveys of Republicans' choice for their next presidential nominee, and he was knotted up with Hillary Clinton in hypothetical general election showdowns.
Now, after month of intense media scrutiny over a couple of controversies in his state, Christie's numbers have faded, according to a new CNN/ORC International survey.
In a possible 2016 matchup with Clinton, the poll indicates Christie trails the former secretary of state by 16 percentage points, with Clinton at 55% and the Governor at 39% among registered voters nationwide. That's a dramatic switch from December, when Christie held a 48%-46% edge over Clinton.

This is becoming a popular phrase around here these days:
"Is it wrong that I'm smiling?"
He's gone from being UP 48-46% to being DOWN by 55-39%! That's an 18% swing in a few weeks.

(But yes, I agree with the other sentiment on this thread. Screw the celebrity gossip about 2016 when 2014 is far more important.)

(30,247 posts)some in the GOP are seeing Jeb Bush as the next establishment candidate. Obviously the T.P. crowd want one of their own, but the sane Republicans think that that would be a losing proposition (as if a third Bush presidency would be more appealing). They must be desperate.

Now that he's taken a dive, the consensus around here is "so what?"

You'll notice a vast amount of people are sick of corporatists, in the comment section. That's encouraging.
And yes, we really need to focus on '14 because that's the money shot for progress in '16. Focus!

(25,183 posts)is smiling, too. They also smile when they think of Jebbie Bush, because they know he can never get the Rethug nomination either. However, the GOP may just throw this one to Jebbie, just to be rid of him with the "loser" sign around his neck forevermore.

(30,247 posts)His surge in the polls was on shaky ground anyway. It was mostly due to his landslide reelection win and the anger against the glitches with the ACA. It probably wouldn't have lasted long term.

(13,297 posts)It is the their only, solitary chance to muddy up her presidential waters if she runs, and I don't doubt for a second that their strategy is dictated from on high. Sometimes the Fox TV Channel 'angle' from above is just too obvious, and this is one of those times.
