Source: Detroit Free Press
WASHINGTON President Barack Obama is expected to sign the farm bill a massive piece of legislation given final passage today in the U.S. Senate while visiting East Lansing on Friday.
A source with knowledge of the event told the Free Press that Obama will sign the bill, which was shepherded to final passage by U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., following an event at Michigan State University in the early afternoon Friday.
Stabenow is chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee and todays passage culminates some three weeks of work on the legislation, which initially split over cuts to food stamps.

2. Cuts millions from food assistance for hungry Americans THUS, cutting millions that would be spent at American businesses (ya, I know, that would include Walmart).
3. Allows Congress and othe misc. assorted D.C. political types to HIDE how much they get in Federal Farm Subsidies (disclosure section of bill was quietly cut out in closed door "meeting" .
And of all the nerve, the President and Congress brag about passing this bill.
Despicable.

(26,281 posts)In other words if he had vetoed it did they have the votes to override it or not? If the answer is yes they had the votes needed to override a veto then I dont believe its reasonable to fault him for signing it.

(31,974 posts)Far short of 2/3s (292). The Senate vote was 68-32, one vote over 2/3s. So it was not veto proof. Also you seem to think the Executive Branch has no input on legislation. That is not the real world.

(26,281 posts)I dont recall saying he had no ability to provide input.

(31,974 posts)From your earlier post: They are after all the ones who craft these spending bills. The "they" you were referring to was Congress. The President has a great deal of influence over any bill that reaches his desk. There are rooms full of staffers at the White House who are in touch with Representatives and Senators every day crafting legislation. Real world. His hands are on every bill.

(26,281 posts)congress and the senate are the ones that craft the spending bills and if you wanna throw a real hissy fit over this bill then fine but make sure you direct your anger at the ones truly at fault.
As for the presidents influence incase you missed the news he doesnt have to much influence with the house republicans as evidenced by their 40+ times at stupidly trying to repeal the presidents healthcare plan.

(47,953 posts)Not so insignificant to those afflicted with the cuts, however. Ironic (or something) that Obama chose to sign this in a blue state that likely will lose far more in SNAP cuts than it will keep/gain in other aspects of the bill. But hey, at least milk won't go to '8 dollars a gallon'!!!(the going meme).
The corporate party sucks. Wonder if the sheep will ever stop to wonder why the democrats never propose huge cuts in waste and then 'settle' for smaller cuts in said waste. Instead they always let the repubs set the agenda.

(3,665 posts)the local station is reporting that the bulk of the farm bill is for food stamps. Just sounds wrong to me. Nevermind, the racists wingers are already out in force.

(47,953 posts)It is dominated by the food stamp program. However that was always going to be the case.
Note these are numbers for total spending over the next decade.
