Vatican surveys find Catholics reject sex rules

Source: Philippine Star

New surveys commissioned by the Vatican show that the vast majority of Catholics in Germany and Switzerland reject church teaching on contraception, sexual morality, gay unions and divorce, findings remarkable both in their similarity and in the fact that they were even publicized.

The Vatican took the unusual step of commissioning the surveys ahead of a major meeting of bishops that Pope Francis has called for October to discuss family issues. The poll was sent last year to every national conference of bishops with a request o share it widely among Catholic institutions, parishes and individuals.

This week, German and Swiss bishops reported the results: The church's core teachings on sexual morals, birth control, homosexuality, marriage and divorce were rejected as unrealistic and outdated by the vast majority of Catholics, who nevertheless said they were active in parish life and considered their faith vitally important.

.......

By contrast, U.S. dioceses haven't reported the results of their surveys in any detail. Baltimore Archbishop William Lori wrote in a recent diocesan article that more than 4,000 people had responded to his survey, but provided scant information on what they said. He wrote that "the majority of Catholics who responded said they strive to practice their faith, but acknowledged the struggles and confusion they face in doing so."

Cardinals who launch slur attacks on communities they don't like would in fact be upset if their followers ever get around to opposing their bullshit. When is this opposition planned? Can't wait. It's what they need to do.

and they realize that celibate old men are the last people who should have any say over anything sexual or reproductive, especially anything concerning the lives and reproductive health of women. Catholics have progressed far beyond the homunculus theory into real science and the Vatican has not, much to its disgrace.

They're also empowered by knowing how corrupt the Vatican is and was when it came to all the raped women and children, moving rapists around and out of the reach of civil law and into new territory with new victims. Much of the story has come out and the pope and his priests are no longer exalted.

much different from anybody else when it comes to these subjects and, at least in my experience, priests understand this and steer clear of controversy from the pulpit. The average Sunday sermon is a lot of "be nice to your neighbor" pablum - rarely any discussion of doctrine or anything which might turn people off and jeopardize the collection basket.

and every Catholic couple I know practices artificial birth control despite the Vatican calling it 'evil'. In today's society very few people can afford more then two kids and will not have endless kids to satisfy the Church.

I have a sister in law that had faithful Catholic parents 53 years ago and the mother gave birth to 16 children. They lived in poverty and when my sister in law was granted a scholarship to go to college her parents turned it down, she was 17, because her place was in the home having babies.

and bigotry espoused toward others and instead of standing up with those attacked to say 'we are with you, we reject those hateful teachings' they far too often beg for 'patience' for the hateful messages of their leadership. They do as they please and ignore the sermons but expect others to endure verbal abuse and libels from their leadership.
Not sure if folks understand this, but when you say 'When our leadership attacks your family using our faith and dogma as a weapon, understand that we don't believe the dogma nor follow the faith' that is the very opposite of comforting, it makes it worse that folks expect others to endure abuse over something they do not even believe nor honor nor follow in their own lives.
Every Catholic who rejects the bullshit should be standing with LGBT and Pro Choice people, flipping off the hierarchy, they should not be begging us for mercy and long suffering endurance toward their hate mongering clerics.
Funny how folks think this is an excuse for the ongoing bigotry and opposition to choice and equality when all it does is add to the burden of guilt on each who allows the bigotry to go unanswered.
It's not the bigots that bug the believers, it's those who point out the bigotry.
