Joe Namath slammed by PETA over fur coat worn at Super Bowl XLVIII

Source: NY Daily News

The fur is starting to really fly between PETA and Joe Namath.

Namath, who sported a $3,000 coyote fur coat that he bought from Marc Kaufman Furs in Manhattan for Super Bowl XLVIII festivities, has drawn the ire of the animal rights organization.

'The real embarrassment on Sunday was Joe Namath's caveperson coat," PETA wrote in a statement. "No matter what he spent on that eyesore, the animals who were trapped, bludgeoned, electrocuted, or skinned alive for their fur paid a lot more — the ultimate price, in fact — and viewers across the country agree that it was too high a price, as demonstrated by the outpouring of anti-fur messages that hit Twitter the second that Namath's coat hit the screen."

Two weeks of them prowling the neighborhood eating small yappy dogs, and she'll add "except coyotes" to the name of her organization.

I thought he was wearing his old Broadway Joe coat.

I, and everyone I knew growing up, lost at least one pet to coyotes. They are VERY destructive animals, especially to chicken farmers and sheep farmers.

Coyotes are extremely overpopulated. They breed like rabbits, they eat anything they can catch (including your garden, if they're hungry for tomatoes today) and nothing will eat one. They're also migratory.

In most of the states that have coyotes, the hunting season is 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Even liberal Vermont has a year-round coyote season. Massachusetts' season is only nine months long, but it's actually more liberal than Idaho's - and you probably didn't think that was possible. (Mass allows dogs to be used and Idaho does not.)

The best thing we could do for the ecosystem would be to kill most of the coyotes, which would balance the number of coyotes with the amount of prey available to them.

Humans must kill more, more, more in order to restore a healthy ecosystem! If the DNR (department of deer hunting and meat farmers) says so, it must be true!

Good point!

> Coyotes are extremely overpopulated.

Check

> They breed like rabbits

Check

> they eat anything they can

Check

> nothing will eat one.

Close enough. Check.

> They're also migratory.

Check.

The best thing we could do for the ecosystem would be to kill most of the humans,
which would balance the number of humans with the amount of resources available to them.

Skinned alive? That's over-the-top, or so I think. The facts alone should be enough to persuade people not to wear the pelt of an animal in this day and age.

But no one in the audience booed him. As the father of two young women who are wonderful human beings, I'm not sure I appreciate his comment. I never considered him to be some kind of hero. A star? Yes. A hero? No.
