The Omaha Public Power District fired the man who managed the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station during the 2011 flood and subsequent shutdown.
The circumstances surrounding the departure of Timothy Nellenbach, who was fired in October, had not been made public until now. But they are detailed in a lawsuit filed today in U.S. District Court in Omaha in which Nellenbach complains of being deprived of retirement benefits.
Because Nellenbach was fired for cause, he was denied a benefits package that included a retiree health-care plan and a pension worth $775,000, the lawsuit says.
Nellenbach, 50, had 20 years with the district. He managed the nuclear plant through the worst of the flooding and safety violations that kept the plant in a cold shutdown, under federal oversight, for nearly three years.
