EARLIER: Thursday - 2/6/2014, 1:27pm ET

WASHINGTON - Seven schools in Alexandria are on lockdown after two people were shot in a neighborhood near the schools.

Alexandria police say a man shot two women inside the front door to their home in the 2400 block of Ridge Road Drive just after 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The man then ran away.

Police continue to search for the shooter in the neighborhood, which is where Ridge Road Drive intersects West Braddock Road. They do not have a description yet.

School officials say the six schools are on lockdown out of an abundance of caution, saying it is standard operating procedure when there's a shooting in the vicinity of any school.

The six schools are:

•TC Williams HS
•Minnie Howard Campus
•Charles Barrett ES
•Matthew Maury ES
•George Mason ES
•Douglas MacArthur ES

Envoy, a private school around the corner from the shooting, is also on lockdown.

Well, no, Envoy is not a private school. It is a nursing home. It is located at 900 Virginia Avenue.

This is the old Circle Terrace Hospital, at 900 Virginia Avenue. The closest AFD station is the one on Cameron Mills Road. Ridge Road Drive is a cross street. I have a laser printer that I bought years ago at a yard sale just about right across the street from 2419 Ridge Road Drive.

They get calls there all the time.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Two women were shot inside an Alexandria home on Thursday, authorities said.

It happened at a home on Ridge Drive. FOX 5's Bob Barnard says first reports from the scene indicate there was a knock on the front door before shots were fired.

Both victims were hospitalized as a result. There's no word yet on their exact conditions. Six schools were on lock down for a time while the investigation was underway, but those lock downs have since been lifted.

Authorities say they do not yet have a suspect in custody.

I didn't get the impression that the people running the investigation were certain that these killings were connected. Not when they say things like "the markings on bullets ... 'have the same general rifling class and characteristics, and are similar in design....'"

Murder Of Transportation Planning Director May Be Connected To Two Other Killings

The recent murders of a regional transportation planning director and a music teacher in Northern Virginia, as well as a decade-old homicide, may be connected, Alexandria police announced today.

Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook told reporters at a press conference this afternoon the markings on bullets used in the February murder of Ruthanne Lodato "have the same general rifling class and characteristics, and are similar in design" to ones used in the November slaying of Ron Kirby and the 2003 murder of Nancy Dunning. Cook said it's possible the same gun was used in each of the three cases, all of which occurred in Alexandria and during the daytime.

"These cases will be investigated as a series of crimes," Cook said, adding they "appear to be linked." He, however, cautioned that it is not certain if the same gun was used or same person was involved.

Friday, Mar 14, 2014 | Updated 2:06 PM EDT

Federal agents are investigating whether a man in custody in West Virginia has a connection to a series of shocking high-profile murders that made residents of Alexandria, Va., afraid to open their own doors.

Charles S. Severance, 53, was arrested as a fugitive on a weapons charge around 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ohio County Library in Wheeling, W.Va. During a court appearance Friday, Severance asked for an attorney and said he didn't want to be extradited to Virginia, WTOV9 reported. Severance is being held at the Northern Regional Jail; a $100,000 bond was set.

Several sources say investigators are questioning whether Severance -- who ran for mayor in Alexandria twice -- has any connection to the deaths of three prominent community members in Alexandria. The killings span 10 years, but two occurred in the past four months.

Police: Man arrested in West Virginia may be linked to Alexandria killings

By Andrea Noble - The Washington Times Friday, March 14, 2014

Alexandria police are investigating whether a 53-year-old man arrested in West Virginia could be tied to a series of three high-profile homicides stretching back 10 years.

Charles Stanard Severance was arrested Thursday in Wheeling, W.Va., on an open warrant from Loudoun County, Wheeling Police detective Sgt. Gregg McKenzie said.

“He was arrested on the felony possession of a firearm charge. That is the extent of our involvement. What happens outside of that, that is up to Alexandria or Loundon County,” he said. “We have been in communication with both agencies.”

Sgt. McKenzie added, “He seems to be a pretty popular guy.”

By FRED CONNORS Senior Staff Writer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

WHEELING - Police in Alexandria, Va., are investigating whether Charles Standard Severance, arrested Thursday by Wheeling police on an outstanding Virginia warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm, has any link to three murders committed in that city over the past 10 years.
....

Police looking into whether man arrested in W.Va. may be tied to Alexandria killings

By Matt Zapotosky and Peter Hermann, Updated: Friday, March 14, 3:13 PM

Alexandria officials said Friday they are looking into the possibility that a man arrested in West Virginia is connected to three high-profile slayings in the city, but a police spokeswoman said detectives are “nowhere close” to charging the man.

Several law enforcement agencies said police in Alexandria and Loudoun County issued a lookout earlier this week for Charles Severance, 53, who has extensive ties to Alexandria. The lookout went to dozens of police departments, but did not mention the slayings in the city. ... He was arrested in Wheeling on Thursday.
....

Severance was questioned by D.C. police on March 7, after he showed up at the Russian Embassy and asked for asylum, according to a police report obtained by the Washington Post.

The incident occurred about 1:25 p.m. in front of the embassy’s main gate in the 2600 block of Wisconsin Avenue NW. D.C. police and U.S. Secret Service agents responded “to investigate a the report of an unwanted guest,” the report says.

Charles Severance: Efforts intensify to return Severance to Virginia

By Jeff Goldberg
March 27, 2014 - 06:10 pm

(WJLA) - Efforts to return Charles Severance to Virginia intensified on Wednesday after the warrant signed by Governor McAuliffe was served in Ohio County in Wheeling, West Virginia.

The warrant stems from a felony gun charge in Loudoun County, where on Wednesday March 12, investigators interviewed Linda Robra. It states: "Ms. Robra informed law enforcement that she had purchased two .22 caliber firearms for her boyfriend, Mr. Charles Severance."

Severance listed his address as Gala Circle in Ashburn, where no one answered the door on Wednesday. The warrant continues: "Mr. Severance departed the residence on March 10, 2014 with the firearms and has not returned since."

The distance from DC to Cumberland, Maryland, on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath is 184-1/2 miles. I made the trip on a bicycle in 1991. I'm betting that Charles threw those guns into the Potomac River somewhere in those 184-1/2 miles. As an alternative, the place where he was staying in Wheeling, West Virginia, was right next to the Roebling-designed suspension bridge over the Ohio River. If the guns aren't in the Potomac River, they could be in the Ohio River. Or Wills Creek. Or the Cheat River. Or the Monongahela. Or....
