Senate fails to advance unemployment bill
Source: CNN 3 minutes ago by Ted Barrett
Washington (CNN) - A Democratic proposal to continue long term unemployment benefits failed Thursday to get the 60 votes needed to clear a procedural hurdle in the Senate despite support from some Republicans.
It was defeated 58 to 40. Four Republicans voted with Democrats in favor of the measure that would have extended for three months benefits that expired in December.
The outcome leaves in doubt the prospects for extending the payments to people who are chronically out of work. Bipartisan negotiators have worked for several weeks to reach agreement but they haven't been able to bridge their differences.
Democrats insisted they have bent over backwards to address GOP concerns, including offsetting the costs and allowing votes on a handful of Republican amendments to the bill. They say Republicans fundamentally oppose extending the benefits any further.

Reid moved for reconsideration. They need one more Republican vote. First they are voting on the Sen. Baucus nomination.

One party is OPENLY waging war on the poor...
the only way to fix this.....is to elect MORE Democrats.

The Republicans are heartless SOBs any way you want to cut it. If they ever control all three branches, it's over in this country. If it isn't already.

On Edit 2/8/14 616p ET Just to be clear, I'm not trolling for Reagan. His economic record sucks in a lot of ways such as his war on unions (beginning with firing the PATCO workers), the beginning of the rise in inequality -- tax policies that raised taxes on the lower and middle classes (Social Security payroll taxes) while cutting the top rates of the income taxes - benefiting primarily the wealthy, the great outsourcing of jobs began under him (remember the book, "America, What Went Wrong" - Barlett and Steele, 1992), inflation adjusted incomes for most Americans fell, ...
and that's just his economic policy. Oh he tripled the national debt too.
However, I thought his support of extending unemployment insurance in 1983 was interesting (similarly there's the famous clip posted many times around DU of him saying that Social Security adds not one dime to the deficit). My headline "We need more Reaganites in the Senate, IMHO" was tongue-in-cheek and to attract attention.
Sadly, 24601 in #19 is right about the inflation rate and interest rate history. I remember those times. I bought a house in mid 1980 (several months before Reagan took office) and can attest to like a 15% mortgage rate if one was lucky enough to get one (in my case I assumed a 9% mortgage, put 25% down, and the seller financed the rest at 12% for a 3 year with a balloon at the end)
Oh, in fairness, the unemployment rate in January 1981 when Reagan took office was 7.5%, and 5.4% when he left office in January 1989. (and the labor force participation rate increased, so no, people didn't drop out of the labor force). To my mind, largely the result of the Keynesian fiscal stimulus that resulted in tripling the debt -- ironic for a Republican and especially ironic for THE Reagan Republican. Federal spending ballooned during the Reagan years.

(3,959 posts)December 19, 1980 - that was a month before Reagan took office. Add in the 1980 average inflation rate of 13.5% and the Jan 1, 1981 unemployment rate of 7.5% and you have former President Carter's misery index.
That's one of the big reasons Reagan was elected in 1980.
