Carney suggests Moscow behind leaked Ukraine call

Source: The Hill

The White House is suggesting that Moscow is behind a leaked phone call in which a top U.S. official can be heard saying "f--k the EU.”

In the call, which was anonymously posted on YouTube, Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and U.S. Ambassador to the Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt lay out their desired outcome for the crisis in Ukraine and accuse the European Union of not doing enough. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Thursday that the Russians tweeted out a link to the leaked recording, suggesting they were involved.

"The video was first noted and tweeted out by the Russian government," Carney said. "I think it says something about Russia's role."
He stopped short of directly saying Russia was responsible for intercepting the call, however.

And State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki accused Russia of reaching "a new low."

2. Amid US-Russia tussle over Ukraine, a leaked tape of Victoria Nuland

Feb 2014

A tape uploaded to YouTube on Feb. 4 appears to be a confidential conversation between Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt.

The State Department hasn't yet commented on the video – and it's possible that the conversation was faked. However, the White House is blaming the Russians for the leak, which probably tells you that it's the real deal. If not, it's an amazing piece of mimicry of how senior US diplomats speak in private.

The leak – if that is what it is – comes as tensions ratchet up between the US and Russia over Ukraine.

Ironic if the russians could now control the NSA intercepts. I assume the diplomats were on a secure line.

Interesting to hear how the sausage gets made.

Do they really think that the protesters care whether the US is meddling or not? The "fuck the EU" tells them that the US doesn't give a shit and that they're on their own, which is what they've been feeling all along. Especially shitting on Vitali, their leader. I mean, it literally reenforces their own beliefs that the US doesn't care about their agency, so 1) it makes them be even more skeptical of the US and 2) it makes them more for the EU.

What does that mean? Well for one it means that if the US is going to make inroads it will now have to provide substantiative support and actually show the protesters that the US cares. The US has largely stayed out of it, so it is a win win for the protesters, since their leader will now have to be contacted and respected (when before he was trying to be subverted).

This is a stupid move by Russia. US intelligence is probably drooling at the opportunity Russia just provided.

I don't even think the Ukrainian culture is particularly enviable (they have their own post-Soviet segregations and nationalist issues). I think the protesters are a reaction to that segregation and I think ultimately the protests are more about the anti-protest law than they are about geopolitical issues.

They are literally protesting just to protest not being able to protest. Literally.

And the US basically doesn't care about the domestic issues, the US only cares about meddling to change the geopolitical dynamic. The same goes for Russia.

Where is Snowden and Glenn Greenwald? I hope they are on this case of Russia intercepting phone conversations between two Americans.

I forgot, these two are not Americans since they are officials of the government of the United states!
