Alaska primed to become third state to legalize retail marijuana title

Source: Washington Times

Alaska is poised to become the third state to legalize retail marijuana after pro-pot advocates this week cleared the signature hurdle to place an initiative on the August ballot.

The Committee to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol in Alaska hit 31,593 valid signatures Tuesday, well above the 30,169 signatures required to place the measure before voters. The initiative is expected to appear on the Aug. 19 primary ballot once a final count is certified by the state.

Alaska follows in the footsteps of Colorado and Washington, where voters approved measures to regulate the sale of recreational marijuana for adults in November 2012. Colorado unveiled the nation’s first retail pot shops in Jan. 1, and Washington is expected to begin marijuana sales in June.

Dependably Republican Alaska would become the reddest state to approve retail marijuana, but Committee spokesman Taylor Bickford predicted the legalization effort would appeal to the electorate’s libertarian streak.

I'll guarantee there isn't a state in the union that doesn't have its share of flamers. Making her the face of Alaska just gives her a memorial that she doesn't deserve.

As far as we know, she's hanging out in Arizona. She did not apply for an Alaska permanent fund dividend last year (although Todd and the younger kids did), which would seem to indicate that she wasn't in the state enough days to qualify.

The weenies here are too lame to allow a vote on decriminalizing pot, but hey, it's a step in the right direction.

State Supreme Court legalized in 1975.

Voters re-criminalized it in 1991 (?).

State Supreme Court then upheld the 1975 ruling and re-legalized possession of small amounts in one's home. It used to be a QP, but now I think it's just an ounce.

No one ever gets busted here for pot anyway unless they've got a serious grow operation going on. I think the main outcome of this law would be the taxes it would generate through dispensaries which we do not have now.
