3,000 birds rescued in cockfighting bust

Source: Omaha World Herald-AP

NEW YORK (AP) — More than 3,000 birds were rescued in a three-county cockfighting takedown in New York this weekend that resulted in nine felony arrests, according to the state Attorney General's Office.

In a statement released Sunday night, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said it was the largest cockfighting takedown in New York state and among the largest in U.S. history.

"Operation Angry Birds" simultaneously targeted locations in Queens, Brooklyn and Ulster County with assistance from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Ulster County Sheriff's office, Schneiderman said.

"Cockfighting is a cruel, abusive and barbaric practice that tortures animals, endangers the health and safety of the public and is known to facilitate other crimes," Schneiderman said.

You've probably read stories over the years when laws are being passed to criminalize it. People say its part of their heritage or its normal in their home country and crap like that.

They can't be housed together, they are probably not fit for human consumption- who knows what kind of supplements they were fed? My guess is they will be put down. Lots of snarky wise cracks in this thread but no real substance.

they'll die quickly and peacefully and not the horror of slowly being pecked to death. And no one will make any undeserved money on their cruelty.

what they will do is put the cocks down. They are so juiced up on antibiotics, amphetamines and other drugs, and because they are trained to be brutal to others of their own kind, there is little else they can do with them. Occasionally, there are rescue farms who will take them, but that is rare as they are difficult to keep.

The hens and chicks can be rescued and may be sent to fowl-friendly farms. Most of the farms the Animal Cops deal with do not ever "harvest" the animals. But once the cameras are off, one never knows.

People bet big money on those animal fights and the 'problem' is much, much worse today and growing.

These places that sell 'trained' adult fighting animals, run promotion and gambling businesses must make millions 'under the table'

That way for some 'underground' horse races too.

Wonder if fighting roosters can be neutered? ('caponed') then they would become all fat, quiet and friendly, can be adopted in packs. They are beautiful chickens

so china can have their slave workers 'process' what little meat is there to make into our cheap chicken dinners and dog 'treats' ?

Who knows, our Gov. already allows this kind of 'sale' with spent chicken factory-farm animals. and all the stolen? walking dead, full of toxins, poor horses the Gov. allows(monitors/counts/regulates) to 'sell' over the border.

Perhaps when our state gov agency kills animals like they trap 'nuisance animals' , or they net and kill deer, or take fawns from a rescue and kill them-they stuff the dead animals in a box for whoever owns such a business for meat and fur.

another statement is this good news-"On May 3, 2013, King announced via Twitter that he would not run for the U.S. Senate in 2014.[25"

weirdness- "In July 2012 King opposed the McGovern amendment (to the 2012 farm bill) to establish misdemeanor penalties for knowingly attending an organized animal fight and felony penalties for bringing a minor to such a fight. King was also one of 39 members of the House to vote against an upgrade of penalties for transporting fighting animals across state lines in 2007.[32] King received a score of zero on the 2012 Humane Society Legislative Fund's Humane Scorecard.[33][34][35] Afterwards, he put out a video clarifying his position where he defended his position by stating that it would be putting animals above humans if it was legal to watch humans fight, but not animals.[36][37]"

IMO, some Rs are evil-weird. He must not like animals much they aren't even worth a misdemeanor charge to him.
