Derek Jeter Says He値l Retire at End of 2014 Season
Source: NY TiMES
For the past several weeks, Derek Jeter has been doing what he has long done as the Yankees shortstop for two decades, getting a head start on spring training by working out almost daily at the Yankees complex in Tampa, Fla.
But Wednesday was different. Before he began his usual morning routine of fielding grounders and taking batting practice and waiting for more of his teammates to join him on the field in coming days, the 39-year-old Jeter phoned the Yankees majority owner, Hal Steinbrenner. He told Steinbrenner he had come to a fateful decision: The 2014 season would be his last in the major leagues.
Steinbrenner was still in New York, having attended the inaugural news conference for the Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka on Tuesday, and was about to get on a plane to return to Tampa. But before he could, Jeter floored him with the news that neither he nor any other member of the Yankees front office had seen coming.

(39,369 posts)You can read about him under the "20 Biggest Disappointments in Yankee History." Mostly played 3B and used to hop, skip and jump before he threw across the infield. Rizzuto loved that, but the guy hit .193 one year...First thing I thought about when I saw Jeter take that number.

With 2 gone, I think 6 will be the only single-digit number left. Roy White had that one for awhile.

(64,407 posts)Jeter is/was good for the sport, his team, an example for the youngsters coming up to look up to. I may despise the Yankees, but I'm glad Jeter was on a team where I got to see him play in the spotlight so many times.
