RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Federal authorities have launched an investigation into North Carolina's environmental agency following a massive coal ash spill on the Dan River.

The U.S. Attorney's Office has issued a grand jury subpoena requesting records from the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. They include emails, memos and reports from 2010 to the Feb. 2 spill.

The spill occurred at a 27-acre Duke Energy coal ash pond, spewing up to 82,000 tons of coal ash mixed with 27 million gallons of contaminated water into the waterway.

The spill, discovered by a security guard, is the third-largest in U.S. history.
