[Wisc.] State superintendent warns bill could undo Common Core standards

Source: Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

Legislation poised to be rushed through the Assembly and Senate could set the stage for undoing a set of nationwide academic standards being implemented in Wisconsin and threatens to undermine the authority of the Department of Public Instruction, the state superintendent said.

The bill set for a vote in the Assembly Education Committee Thursday morning, and a companion Senate version introduced this week, represents the latest showdown in the polarizing debate over the Common Core State Standards.

"As soon as I saw this, I gasped," State Superintendent Tony Evers said of the legislation, which has the backing of conservative Republicans and Gov. Scott Walker.

"If we thought the Common Core State Standards were political before, this ratchets it up about 1,000 percent," Evers said.

I have nothing against it, except a large percentage of hs students there cannot do the reading that is suggested as examples. Big problem when you get to HS and you can't read. THAT should be dealt with, #1

But if other countries have nationwide (not provincial) curricula, why not the US? Common Core has been bogged down by all these right wing "the feds are out to control our education/Agenda 21" conspiracy theories.

8. My son is autistic. Do you know what I had to tell my son today?

I had to tell him to do his best on his computer test tomorrow and not to worry or be upset if he doesn't do very well. Do you know why I have to tell him this? He doesn't have any educational assistants in any of his general education classrooms. PE, Science, Computer or Math. His math class is manageable because they have changed the curriculum to meet him where he is in math comprehension. They have had to go back and teach him things that he didn't really learn in the math class in middle school that followed Common Core. In the other classes he is expected to perform exactly like his general education peers with no help. I cannot begin to describe how angry I am at our education policy. Our education policy fails any student who struggles. Sure, if students can pick things up quickly and understand things with no problem that's great. I'm sure they can follow Common Core just fine. My daughter did just fine with Common Core. But not all students just fly through school. Many struggle and Common Core only makes them struggle even more.
