Steve Jobs, Snoopy, John Lennon to grace US stamps

Source: AFP

Washington (AFP) - Steve Jobs, Snoopy, John Lennon and gay rights icon Harvey Milk will likely soon share a distinct American honor: their own US postage stamps.

Well, Snoopy will probably have to share the spotlight with Charlie Brown and the rest of the cast of the popular Peanuts comic, according to a secret planning document obtained by the Washington Post.

But it's the British Beatles icon John Lennon who will cause the real stir among stamp collectors: US postage stamps are only supposed to feature Americans. Which is perhaps the reason why a date has not yet been set for the stamp's release.

The pop culture heavy list is aimed at helping the financially strapped postal service attract a new generation of collectors, the Post said.

but there is something special and more personal about someone taking the time to hand write a letter. And, for much less than a cup of coffee, I can send said letter across the country.

and it has been causing me to revert to some of the old ways in a lot of things. On the shaving side use a shaving brush and soap, as well as a straight razor. I have gotten deep into fountain pens and improving my handwriting. It is great fun corresponding the old way. My favorite pen is my Parker 51 which was made in 1947- the same year my father was born. It is nice to hold something in your hand that was made with quality and pride. We used to be able to do such things.

as my girlie dog has taken to standing on my chest with squeaky toy in mouth and face/eyes focused so far down on the toy as she tries to get me to tug on it.... well, it is just like this:

Love Snoopy--hope he's on a forever stamp.

The custom since the 1920s has been to issue a stamp for them in either the year they die or the next year.

Taft-- 1930
Wilson-- 1924
Harding-- 1923
Hoover-- 1965
FDR-- 1945
Truman-- 1973
Eisenhower-- 1969
Kennedy-- 1964
LBJ-- 1973
Nixon-- 1995

An interesting exception is Calvin Coolidge, who died in 1933 but didn't get on a stamp until 1938. But Coolidge made up for that by being the only US President to ever appear on a US coin while he was still alive.

"This change will enable us to pay tribute to individuals for their achievements while they are still alive to enjoy the honor," Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said in a statement.
