Kinky Friedman outlined his reasons for favoring the decriminalization of pot, including a boost to state tax revenue and a way to neutralize Mexican cartels.

AUSTIN — Entertainer Kinky Friedman is running a long-shot campaign for agriculture commissioner with a platform to match: marijuana legalization.

Despite Texas’ tough-on-drugs history, it could be an opportunity for Friedman, who has fallen far short in previous runs for governor and agriculture commissioner, to raise attention for the issue and himself.

“It’s not too much to say that if we legalize pot, it would effectively castrate the Mexican drug cartels and make the state of Texas the new cartel,” Friedman said. “If we wait 15 years, we will be the caboose on the train.”
