Mexican drug kingpin Guzman captured in Mexico: U.S. government source
Source: Reuters
(Reuters) - Mexico's most wanted man, drug kingpin Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, has been captured in Mexico by U.S. and Mexican law enforcement officials, a U.S. government source confirmed on Saturday.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not elaborate.
In Mexico City, presidential spokesman Eduardo Sanchez said authorities have "captured an individual in Sinaloa (state)" whose identity had not been confirmed.
Guzman runs the powerful Sinaloa cartel, which has been fighting a brutal war with other gangs over turf and drug-trafficking routes to the U.S.

I guess we know what one topic was.
Guzman was at a hotel in the north-western resort of Mazatlan, the AP news agency reported.

This follows wide spread reports the DEA had a decades long deal with the Sinaloa Cartel to allow them to smuggle tons of marijuana and meth into the country.

(10,274 posts)It was very suspicious the way he "escaped".
It's terrible the narco wars, I'm guessing this will lead to more killings.

(10,274 posts)Following the capture of Mexicos most elusive drug lord, all major cartels announced they would immediately cease their operations, saying drug trafficking was just becoming too risky.
Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, head of the large Sinaloa cartel, was arrested in the resort city of Mazatlan, on Mexicos Pacific coast. His capture is said to be the final chapter in the joint U.S.-Mexico war on drugs.
You win, because effective today, were going to stop producing and smuggling cocaine and other drugs, said Ismael El Mayo Zambada, Guzmans business partner. Were all really scared of being sent to prison, to tell you the truth.
As news of Guzmans arrest spread across the world, heads of other cartels said they, too, were closing up shop to avoid trouble with the police.
Its time for us to throw in the towel, said a source from Los Zetas, one of Mexicos other major cartels. If the police can get to El Chapo, even with his crazy mustache disguise, they can get to all of us.

One of his nicknames was "Poppy" Bush. As in opium poppy. Started in the golden triangle and moved on to Afghanistan.
The Taliban destroyed an entire years worth of Opium crops. They were offered "a carpet of gold or a carpet of bombs" to re-establish the crops. They refused to cooperate and were given the bombs. Within one year of our invasion the Opium crop was re-established which makes up 80% of the world's Opium.
Using internet archives this could be tracked before and after the war, with the CIA's very own factbook which shows statistics on illicit drugs.
