Arizona Business Community Abandons GOP On Anti-LGBT Bill

If Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer decides to veto the anti-gay discrimination bill waiting on her desk, she'd have a lot of cover from a reliably Republican constituency to defy her GOP colleagues in the state legislature: the business community.
Every major state business group, along with several major individual businesses, have urged Brewer, a Republican, to veto the "religious freedom" bill. The legislation would require the government to have a compelling reason to stop somebody from exercising their religious belief, which gay rights advocates say would lead to LGBT discrimination. Brewer hasn't officially said what she'll do with the bill -- her options are to sign it, veto it or wait five days and let it become law without her signature. She has noted, that it's very "controversial." Her office didn't comment to TPM.
What doesn't seem to be controversial among prominent Republicans and business interests is what Brewer should do: Veto it. U.S. Sens. Jeff Flake and John McCain (R) want the bill stopped. The presumptive Republican nominee to replace her, Mesa Mayor Scott Smith, stated his opposition to it.
Now the business community is coming out in droves.

(24,560 posts)Thanks for adding it to the thread. I understand his concern for the economy of his state, but a boycott is just what is required if Brewer signs that piece of #% law.

Just once I would love to see these asshats pay for their indulgence.

Another obscene reminder that the sound of the multitude of people filling the town square falls on deaf ears.

As far as I am concerned the die has already been cast. The AZ house and senate passed this bill to send to Brewer by a very large margin. The citizens of AZ elected the majorities in the AZ house and senate that passed the bill that now sits on Brewer's desk. the citizens of AZ have spoken. They have given the rest of the country and the world very clear evidence, literately in black in white, in the written word, how they feel about people of color ("papers please!" law) and the LGBT community (this DoS attack).
Embargo the whole state. Bring the whole state to an economic standstill. No matter the outcome with Brewer. WE SHOULD NOT TOLERATE THE HATE AND IGNORANCE OF THE gOP ONE DAY MORE.
