Report: Minimum wage hike would cut food stamp spending by $4.6 billion a year

Source: Washington Post

Raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour would reduce federal food stamp spending by $4.6 billion a year, according to a report to be released Wednesday by the liberal-leaning Center for American Progress.

The proposal, a top legislative priority for President Obama and congressional Democrats, would reduce enrollment in the food stamp program by as much as 9.2 percent, the report said.

A report last month from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said about 15 percent of the nation’s workforce would see wages rise under Obama’s plan to raise the minimum wage, adding that the increase would lift 900,000 people out of poverty.

You mean to tell me -

If people make earn enough money at one job to support themselves - put a roof over their head, food on their table, clothing on their backs, etc. etc.

That it will save the Fed Gov a whole bunch of do-re-mi?

You don't say!?! Who'da thunk it that it would be back up with actual hard numbers to prove it as fact!

themselves making too much money to QUALIFY for food stamps. So all that new disposable income of theirs would only go toward spending for the same food they're getting under food stamps.

Unless they also raised the amount you could earn and still qualify for food stamps, which they SHOULD DO, but won't, then we would see a little easing on the burden of the working poor.

Why is it taking these idiots so long to figure out what most of us have known for...well, forever?

It's not really a liberal or conservative issue--it's a common sense issue.

History shows that Henry Ford doubled wages, made more money and kept happier workers. Costco is doing it today.

The rich would rather have that money come out of the people's pockets, rather than their own.

You see, the problem is this: the Ruling Class want the people to suffer, to hunger, and to fear. So the idea of reducing food stamp spending by raising the minimum wage to approximate marginal living status is anathema. Better to keep the wages below subsistence level and cut food stamps anyway.

It's not really about saving money. It's about keeping the marks in line.
