Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday called Russian President Vladimir Putin a "tough guy with a thin skin" who was "squandering the potential" of his country.
I know that his political vision is of a greater Russia, she told students at the University of California at Los Angeles. I said when I was still secretary that his goal is to re-Sovietize Russias periphery, but in the process he is squandering the potential of such a great nation, the nation of Russia, and threatening instability and even the peace of Europe.
Clinton also clarified that she wasn't "making a comparison" to Hitler when she likened Putin's intervention in Ukraine to actions taken by Nazi Germany in the 1930s.

(30,247 posts)He is always bragging about his machismo. What else is the message supposed to be when we see photos of Putin riding without a shirt, hunting or practicing judo? The guy has a paper thin skin. He is a bully, he's Christie with nuclear weapons.
The comments of some of you, no matter what Hillary says, are predictable.

(13,069 posts)Should we ignore what he has done? Or, are you just waiting at the keyboard for something to attack Clinton with?
I can see the next headline: Clinton thinks puppies are cute. How can she like puppies after she personally and literally sent troops into Iraq to kill puppies? What a neocon.

(90,061 posts)But we want it to be credible, fact based, not a weak analogy to Hitler and the Sudentenland, and the utterly different world that was Europe in the 1930s.
It is even easier to point out differences than similarities, that's the problem with too easy Hitler analogies. It seems mainly intended to offend, and for that it may work.

(13,069 posts)for the crowd that focuses on the sensational rather than look in depth at a topic. It was not a weak analogy, but rather a thoughtful analysis at the similar play books of the two invaders. Of course it really does not matter what she says...everything is viewed through negative glasses and twisted.

(13,069 posts)I remember a time on DU when you could have discussions without them turning into personal attacks. I think this place is a microcosm of what our nation has become. Us-verses-them. If someone disagrees with you they become an other, dehumanized and therefore insult-able. Divide and conquer. The vast right wing conspiracy encourages division. We lemmings regurgitate the BS fed to us, against our interests.

I disagree with Ms. Clinton, and I'm not going to shut up about it.
