US to stand by Ukraine on Crimea annexation

Source: Al Jazeera

US says it will not recognise referendum on future of Ukraine region as it is in violation of international law.

President Barack Obama has said the US will stand by Ukraine in an effort to help it maintain territorial integrity and sovereignty.

After meeting with Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Ukraine's prime minister, at the White House on Wednesday, Obama said the west will be forced to apply a "cost" to Moscow if it does not change its course in Crimea.

Yatsenyuk said his country "will never surrender" to Russia and maintained his stance that Ukraine is ready for talks with Moscow. He added that Ukraine "is and will be part of the Western world".

We also hand-picked its leadership. So now, as its creator, the very least we can do is to "stand by" the damn thing!

That was a whole cabinet meeting, just picking out the wallpaper and making sure it matched the color scheme on the new chairs.

Jeesh.

That kind of thing, with the "wallpaper" and all, trumps the results of a democratic election every time!

Everyone knows that, right?

Maybe he can tell us why he doesn't seem so concerned about the territorial integrity of Serbia and is continuing the US recognition of Kosovo after what amounted to a UN sponsored theft of territory?

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Crazy-town. People of Kosovo were threatened with genocide and wanted independence so they would not be genocided. UN-sponsored theft?

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Wed Mar 12, 2014, 03:30 PM, and the Jury voted 0-6 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The poster may be incorrect, but the alerter could have posted a response instead of an alert.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: You can't remove a post because it's wrong or stupid. Clearly the poster is incorrect, misguided, and probably a bit of an idiot, but none of those things are grounds for having a post hidden. Instead, let the mockery of his ridiculousness begin! Heap upon him or her the scorn he or she so richly deserves.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I don't think this constitutes rude, disruptive or over the top. Better to argue the point.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

For the record, I was Juror#3.

7. U.S. Will Respond if Russian Actions Trigger NATO Obligations, General Says
Wed Mar 12, 2014, 06:35 PM
Mar 2014

"If Russia is allowed to do this, which is to say move into a sovereign country under the guise of protecting ethnic Russians in Ukraine, it exposes Eastern Europe to some significant risk because there are ethnic enclaves all over Eastern Europe and the Balkans," General Martin Dempsey said in an interview to PBS television.

There are currently 400,000 Romanians living in Ukraine, Dempsey said, citing the example of Romania, which has been a member of NATO since 2004.

"We do have treaty obligations with our NATO allies. And I have assured them that, if that treaty obligation is triggered, we would respond," he said in the interview on Friday night.

In particular, the obligation Dempsey cited is Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which states “that an armed attack against one or more [NATO members] shall be considered an attack against them all.” In such a case the alliance is entitled to mobilize in collective self defense. Although, Article 5 has only been invoked once in NATO’s history — in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

During WWII, you may recall, we had a bit of a Great Depression going on. Nasty, that. Should have stayed home. Perhaps Russia could have knocked Hitler back even after Invasion of Britain. Perhaps not, and Russia would know be known as the Union of Soviet Siberian Republics, composed principally of territory east of the Urals.

Or perhaps so, and we'd have the Eurasian Union of Soviet States, stretching from Greenland to Kamchatka. If that had collapsed, who'd have rescued them? Rather like Eastern Europe after the collapse of communism with no bailout. I mean, you'd have Transdnistria writ large.

I'm sure there was some problem of some urgency to somebody during WWI. Perhaps the franchise for women? If not, certainly civil rights. Workers rights. And yet off we went.

By the same token the various supporters we had during the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 had better things to do than help the US. Not their problem, they had other fish to fry. Without their help, perhaps we'd be Commonwealth now, having gotten our independence as a result of WWII. Then again, perhaps we'd have been attacked much more aggressively and earlier in WWiI, since there was no need to wait until after Pearl Harbor. As part of the Empire, we'd have been up with with any other part of the Empire.
