Troubled waters: Nuclear radiation found in B.C. may pose health concerns

Source: Vancouver Sun

A radioactive metal from the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster in Japan has been discovered in the Fraser Valley, causing researchers to raise the alarm about the long-term impact of radiation on B.C.’s west coast.

Examination of a soil sample from Kilby Provincial Park, near Agassiz, has for the first time in this province found Cesium 134, further evidence of Fukushima radioactivity being transported to Canada by air and water.

“That was a surprise,” said Juan Jose Alava, an adjunct professor in the school of resource and environmental management at Simon Fraser University, in an interview on Tuesday. “It means there are still emissions ... and trans-Pacific air pollution. It’s a concern to us. This is an international issue.”

Cesium 134 has a half-life of two years, meaning its radioactivity is reduced by half during that time. Its presence in the environment is an indication of continuing contamination from Fukushima.

<snip>

The models suggests that in 30 years, Cesium 137 levels in the whales will exceed the Canadian guideline of 1,000 becquerels per kilogram for consumption of seafood by humans — 10 times the Japanese guideline.

Oh god, it is so much worse than I could have thought.
this clown is expressing surprise that there may be "still emissions" from Fukishima?????????

I get that there is hardly no MSM news of it, but c'mon..don't they have computers in Canada?

We're going to Hawaii soon and I have worried about this very health issue for months. I really would like to find out if radiation has been detected in the waters around the Hawaiian Islands. Anyone know who to contact? When you go there, you can find out about the weather and dangerous undercurrents and shark sightings, surely we should be able to find out if the water is radioactive.

not kidding.

If this got out, and how dangerous it could be, the answer might be having to deal with the entire population of Hawaii, and all the people who live along the coast of the U.S.

Eventually someone private may gather enough data, but I think as long as it is in the hands of what we have for a government, they will weigh the safety of everyone against staying in office so that the next person has to take the fall. And safety won't win.

Same result as Santa Barbara. Essentially the remnants of our Nuclear Weapons tests in the 50's.

ain't gonna help us now. It's the nuclear disaster we've feared since the early 50s - only in slow motion.

Not until the water borne gets to you will you have an advantage.

This stuff has come over in the air.

It has been circulating the globe from day one with a little more added every day. That's like 1,050 days, so far.

Not until the plume in the Pacific starts washing up can you guys can start claiming you're number 1.

"Plume in the Pacific" : Nice ring it has to it, eh?

Or, how 'bout this one : "Pacifica de Plumashika"

We should come up with a good slogan, eh?. Make it fun.

Being on the west coast (Bay Area), puts me at more risk the El Yoda Ball (Rude Pundit), or at least it will when the water plume gets here. On the other hand, maybe we'll have self-cooking fish With a busted oil tanker or two, they might even deep-fry themselves

The World hangin on that school wall. There was just so much there, so much to wonder and so much blue to make ya wanna swim with Jacques Cousteau to them undiscovered waters.
Its now a fricken shame the blue oceans of our earth isn't anything more than a cesspool now. British Petroleum put the icing on the cake by making the Gulf a toilet. And now the majestic Pacific. Every other day now another 'Woopsie' comes across the Pacific from Japan. 'Woopsie' Fukashima is really still a boilin. 'Woopsie' the radiation numbers have been re-adjusted to reveal a staggerig dump of that hot water into the ocean. Its been three years of fricken 'Woopsie'.
What was heralded as startling news just months ago last fall regarding Pacific fisheries is heard no more. Last I recall, the sardines had disappeared in the Pacific. The Salmon population is being closely monitored for this springs' migration due to alarming statistics of last fall. And the untold populations of the Pacific food chain from top to bottom are in a movement as to which has ever been seen before.
We've just about left this beautiful blue ball spinning in space for eternity into nothing more than a smoldering rock.

It came over in the air. Then the rain washed it down into the ditches where it became concentrated enough the radio-shack meters could find it.

Radio-shack comment was a joke.

They told us it was here back in 2011. No immediate danger they said. They were right, you did not immediately die, did you?

Starfish and seals and stuff? Yeah some of them are dead.

It would be so ironic if the Japanese whale hunts have to stop because the whales are unfit for human consumption due to radiation from Fukushima.
