The Jeep Plant Mitt Romney Said Was Moving To China Is Booming In Ohio

The auto plant at center of a misleading TV ad run by Mitt Romney's campaign during the 2012 presidential election is booming, Bloomberg reported Friday.
In a last-ditch effort to swing Ohio into the Republican column in the waning days of the campaign, Romney's team aired an ad that gave the impression that Chrysler would ship jobs to China because of President Obama's auto rescue.
"Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China," the ad's narrator claimed.
Not only is the factory in question still in Ohio, demand for Jeeps is so great that Chrysler is planning on hiring up to 1,000 part-time workers as a way to alleviate pressure on regular employees who work 60 hours per week.

He would have moved that plant to China at the first opportunity. He's a liar, and IMHO, a traitor, too.

(2,520 posts)What has happened in the past in other industries is components are assembled offshore, shipped into the US assembly plants and assembled into finished product. At some point the Bureau of Imports will be asked for a binding resolution defining when that collection of parts becomes finished product qualifying for the "Made in USA" or "Assembled in USA" label. For computers, the pre-built chassis becomes a computer when the Central Processing Unit (CPU) is installed.
In the automotive industry the warning signs to watch for are labor problems--unrest in the workforce or a claimed inability to find enough "qualified workers" to satisfy the demand. They will say that in order to meet demand the company needs to import pre-assembled dashboards, or pre-assembled chassis drive-train units. As they come closer and closer to a completed salable unit the automotive industry will ask for a determination as to when that collection of automotive parts transforms into an automobile.
It is well known that Mitt Romney doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut.
He gave us evidence of his "lack of filter" while in England at the Olympics when he bragged he had met with MI-6. The English don't really want to admit there is such thing as MI-6 outside of James Bond films.
So my ears pick up when he said Fiat was planning to make Jeeps in China for the world market. Fiat and Chrysler countered by saying the product made in China was for the Chinese market only.

(2,375 posts)Must say, I got uptight when I read the part about 1,000 part-time workers. Then I read the full article.
Yeah -- this really is election gold.
