Ukrainian 'serviceman killed in Crimea'

A Ukrainian serviceman has been killed in an attack at a military facility in the Crimean capital Simferopol, the defence ministry has said.

Al Jazeera's Paul Brennan, reporting from Kiev, said the ministry's spokesman had confirmed the soldier's death after Tuesday's attack.

The ministry described those behind the attack in the peninsula as "armed masked men".

On the last VICE news report one of the Ukrainian base commanders said there were about 50 Russian soldiers in the base, and he had about 60 men defect.

He had 50 men left under his command in a stalemate on the same base---

They were taken outside, lined up, and their weapons were taken from them," it quotes spokesman Vladyslav Seleznyov as saying.

16:29: The Ukrainian soldier who was killed during the storming of a military base in Simferopol is a warrant officer who was on duty in a park inside the base, defence ministry spokesman Vladyslav Seleznyov is quoted by the Ukrayinska Pravda website as saying (BBC Monitoring).
