Tom Harkin is my hero, Iowa Senate candidate Bruce Braley says (“I'm a proud progressive")

COUNCIL BLUFFS — U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley introduced himself to western Iowans this week with his “hero” on his mind.

“I'm a proud progressive,” said Braley, a Democrat from Waterloo, Iowa. “The people of Iowa need somebody to be their champion the way Tom Harkin has been for the last 40 years.”

Braley, a four-term congressman representing northeast Iowa, wants to replace Harkin in the U.S. Senate. Harkin, a Democrat from Cumming, announced his retirement late last year.

Braley is the lone Democrat in the Senate race, which means he'll sail through Iowa's June 13 primary election.

1. One thing I love about Bruce is that he has done the jobs that we do

I can't remember his full resume, but I believe hiway construction and restaurants and various other jobs have been stops along the way. He comes from a solid Iowa family with a school teacher mother who I believe still subs over in Brooklyn. He is really one of us who knows what it feels like when some politician screws the working person over.

He will make a great Senator. I just hope he is more outspoken than he was as a Representative.
