Thunderstorms with torrential rain hammered the northern Gulf Coast on Friday, triggering flash flooding in parts of four states.
Hardest hit was Wilkinson County, Miss. where 6 to 8 inches of rain flooded more than 40 homes, 16 apartments, and many roads, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. Another two structures were flooded in Amite County, Miss.
Street flooding was also reported in parts of the New Orleans and Pensacola, Fla. metro areas. Pensacola picked up 2.35 inches of rain in less than an hour just before noon Friday.

(53,949 posts)A gentle rain can do that! The drainage there SUCKS! When the rain really starts coming down, you better have a boat, canoe, or an ark close by, because the waters rise quickly and with no mercy. Every time there was a hard rain, my backyard looked like a lake. My Chihuahua refused to go out, unless I dressed him in his sailor suit!

(8,515 posts)for Democratic governors, etc. Mitch Landreiu, Mary Landreiu's brother, is mayor of NOLA, and is doing a very good job, especially with the mess that Katrina and Ray Nagin left. After Katrina, the Republicans painted Kathleen Blanco with a black brush, and it stuck. They won, even though So. Louisiana, had a lot of Democratic votes.
The rest of LA, especially Middle and Northern La. can be considered the bible belt and they pull a lot of weight. We are actually two states, North and South.

(8,515 posts)The republicans started winning small elections, like Clerk of Court's and city mayors, etc. The famous central tabulators determine our elections, in my opinion, and here, the Clerks of Court count the votes from the Parish. There have been times when I felt elections were stolen, but we do have a lack of political sophistication in Louisiana, along with a lot of charm and fantastic food. However, even in Washington state, where Seattle leads politically, there are many areas that are religious bigots and, of course, vote republican. No state is truly all of one party. We are a democracy and republicans are allowed to live among us, most of the time quite peacefully.
