New Mexico governor calls for calm as FBI investigates Albuquerque police

After riot officers use tear gas at 12-hour protest against perceived police abuse officials call for patience

Associated Press in Albuquerque
theguardian.com, Monday 31 March 2014 18.05 EDT

A day after hundreds of people clashed with Albuquerque riot officers over police shootings, New Mexico's governor said Monday that she understands the public's frustration but called on protesters to remain calm while US officials investigate.

Mayor Richard Berry said Monday that one officer twisted his knee but no protesters were hurt during the 12-hour demonstration on Sunday, despite the use of tear gas on the crowd. Four people were arrested in the melee, police chief Gorden Eden said Monday.

Berry said officials monitoring events from an emergency operations center decided to use the gas after some people walked onto a freeway, endangering themselves. Eden says people laid down on the highway.

On Sunday, protesters marching back and forth between downtown and the University of New Mexico blocked traffic, tried to topple street signs and called for the police chief and other city officials to resign, authorities said.

there were THOUSANDS of protesters...not hundreds

this shooting was the straw that broke the camels back....there have been many unwarranted police shootings in our state that resulted in police walking away from just plain murders of individuals without any repercussions for the police...just families burying members of their families...

it is about time people take to the streets to protest unwarranted police killings....we have become too complacent in this country but allowing cop brutality to reach these heights....

The pictures all told a very different story.

Actually, the protests here should make other people take note. The militarized police need to leave that Robo Cop gear at the station unless we're being invaded. Boyd was peaceful until some asshole threw a flash-bang grenade at him. At that point, he knew they were out to get him, poor bastard.

Relations with the cops in this town have been tense for a long time and went to a slow boil after OWS was crushed. The Boyd shooting just blew the lid off.

and be in the street, in the jail if necessary.

But we''re having a program on the behavioral health, which the governor has screwed with with very little protest from much of the state's citizens. And the cuts affect exactly the sorts of programs that might have helped this sad man with his obvious mental health issues, but not any more so than the law enforcement officers who shot him.
