SALT LAKE CITY (AP) A top Mormon leader reiterated the church's opposition to gay marriage Saturday during the church's biannual general conference.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' stance on homosexuality has softened in recent years, but this marks the second consecutive conference in which leaders took time to emphasize the faith's insistence that marriage should be limited to unions between a man and a woman, as God created.
"While many governments and well-meaning individuals have redefined marriage, the Lord has not," said Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve. "He designated the purpose of marriage to go far beyond the personal satisfaction and fulfillment of adults, to more importantly, advancing the ideal setting for children to be born, reared and nurtured."
In the October 2013 church conference, Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum said human laws cannot "make moral what God has declared immoral."

(6,241 posts)What non-Mormons do in their personal lives is none of your business. Feel free to set limits on your congregations, for people that are part of your faith. Let everyone else ignore you in peace. People that follow your religion voluntarily give up their freedom as part of joining. No one else has any obligation to give a crap about your opinion. Consenting adults have the right to do what they want. You stay out of it.

Today in most of the Islamic world homosexuality is not socially or legally accepted. In nine Muslim countries, Afghanistan, Iran, Mauritania, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, the UAE, and Yemen, homosexual activity carries the death penalty.[3][4][5][6]
Alternatively, same-sex sexual intercourse is legal in five Muslim-majority nations (Albania, Turkey, Bahrain, Jordan, and Mali). In Albania there have been discussions about legalizing same-sex marriage.[7][8] Homosexual relations between females is legal in Kuwait (but homosexual acts between males are illegal). Lebanon has had recent internal efforts to legalize homosexuality.[9] Even in regions were homosexuality is not illegal it is seen as a shame by most families,[who?] and privately executing the punishments required by Islamic law[which?] may be seen as morally justified.
Most Muslim-majority countries have opposed moves to progress LGBT rights at the United Nations, in the General Assembly and/or the UNHRC. However, Albania and Sierra Leone have signed a UN Declaration supporting LGBT rights.[10][11] OIC member-state Mozambique provides LGBT rights protections in law in the form of non-discrimination laws, and discussions on legally recognizing same-sex marriage have been held in the country.[12][13]

(9,154 posts)In the above quote, religious-right columnist Tim Dunkin argues that we know homosexuality is immoral because of the physical and psychological harm that it causes. The lasting damage that gay people do to their bodies, he says, is proof that theyre misusing them in ways that God never intended.
Well, I think hes onto something. The only thing is, I think hes aiming at the wrong target. Theres a practice that indisputably causes far more harm, wreaks far more destruction on human bodies and minds, than homosexuality. That practice is heterosexual procreation, and I hope that sensible, right-thinking Christians across the land will join with me in urging Congress to pass a law banning this wicked and sinful act.
Do you doubt that procreation is against natural law? Well, just consider this evidence.
First of all, theres the hymen. This membrane, which is a completely natural part of womens bodies, covers and protects the vaginal opening clear evidence of Gods benevolent design and his intention not to permit anything to pass through. When the hymen is torn, often during a womans first act of intercourse, the usual result is pain and blood, which is tangible proof of the harm done by disobeying Gods will. Why, some women have to have surgery just to make it possible for them to have sex! What clearer proof could there be that were misusing our bodies and going against natural law when we do it?

(1,968 posts)Or realize that your views can't be the law (and couldn't be even if you paid taxes, but at least you'd be free to go political on the rest of us).
Those are the church's only two options.
Either they have the courage of their convictions or the tax breaks are more important. I suspect I know which one will win.
