du Pont heir didn't go to court-ordered clinic
Source: Wilmington News Journal
A du Pont heir who raped his daughter was supposed to complete an intensive treatment program at an inpatient psychiatric clinic in Massachusetts as a condition of a sentence that allowed him to avoid prison time.
But he never did, court records show.
Superior Court Judge Jan R. Jurden ordered probation for Robert H. Richards IV in February 2009, on the condition that he be accepted for treatment at the expensive McLean Hospital near Boston, according to a transcript of the sentencing. Jurden agreed to probation only after the prosecutor argued the state typically would demand prison time in such child abuse cases, but was willing to accept probation because of the therapy Richards would receive at the out-of-state clinic.
"If the court is not inclined to send him to the Massachusetts program, then the state would be asking for some period of jail that the court would feel would be appropriate under the circumstances," prosecutor Renee Hrivnak said during the Feb. 6, 2009 hearing.

We all know that the rules are different for his kind in this country.
Prison is for the little people.

(17,301 posts)What a perverted justice system. Kind of like feudalism where the king, royals and lords could do just about anything they wanted, especially to serfs. The laws did not apply to the inherited uber rich.
We are nothing but serfs with voting "power".

(30,247 posts)They just released a man who spent more than 24 years in jail for a murder that he didn't commit. Not only he didn't kill the victim, he was at Disney World in FL when the crime was committed. He still got convicted and had several appeals rejected. How the heck did that happen? Oh yeah, he wasn't a rich white heir, he was a poor black guy.

(53,661 posts)And if he'd lost his in prison, or given the death penalty in some other state, what would have been said?
Just another worthless killer who won't be on the public dime, kept alive all those years after committing murder.
Since this is today's news, it ought to be an OP, but it'd sink like a stone anyway.
I imagine the hell his family went through all this time, knowing he was innocent. That their words and evidence were dismissed repeatedly. And this man, who went to prison, what it did to him. He lost the most productive years of his life, but that's not all he lost.
It reminds me of this video, and it's time that something be done:

Centuries of racism. No, as Hank Aaron said today about the way Obama is still treated, it's not over. America needs to face up to what has been and is being done by Atwater's game.
Thanks, Beacool for posting on this travesty of justice.

(1,712 posts)The only reason trouble might come this asshat's way is if public outrage scares the judge more than not staying bought off.

(1 post)This story never even made the local news back when it was originally in court. It came out when the lawsuit was filed by the Mother. Since then our local paper has revealed just how many of those sworn to protect failed this little girl. You commented about "public outrage" and "scaring the judge"...BOTH OF THOSE THINGS HAPPENED...and the states response?...they added extra security FOR THE JUDGE!!

Vanessa Redgrave as du Pont's mother[2]
Sienna Miller as Nancy Schultz, Dave's wife

(53,661 posts)Not much different from the rest of the filthy rich. It's possible the old rich have the angst of dissonance from educations that tell them that their money and their deeds don't match.
The new rich, most of the Libertarian and the GOP, have no such qualms. And likely, never will. They've made a religion of greed.
Seeing the report on this thread of the family gifts to Delaware, it's obvious some in the state feel they owe the DuPont heir some slack for what their family means to them...
It'll be interesting to see if his living accomodations change, but it's not likely. These social groups fight to keep from being treated like the little people. They know what would happen if all their dirty laundry, not just in sexual matters, was exposed to the light of day.

(182,717 posts)And the Coors. Basically ever other generation in both families almost destroyed their legacy and then the next generation saved it. This went on for several cycles.
Back in the 90's I went on a corporate outing to Montpelier (James Madison's home) that had been inhabited by a du Pont heiress. She was filthy rich but was continually without running water, electricity, and heat we were told by the guide. The place was about to undergo a renovation (completed a few years ago) but it was a dump. Missing plaster in most of the kitchen and there was a parlor that looked like a bad movie set of a rinkydink nasty disco. Disco ballS, red velvet couches, and checkerboard floors.
